Palmettoman, My T. fortunei is just starting to trunk. I do not know if it will take -20C, but I can GUARANTEE we will find out next year :D . T. fortunei laughs at -8C, they can take MUCH colder temperatures. I will have basjoos available in spring and about 20 other musa cultivars. Just let me kno...

PALMETTOMAN, If your looking for polycarbonate panals I would buy them from warehouse plastics in scarborough. The material from this company will be cost less then home depot and they will cut it to size. They also carry Polycarbonate Twin-wall for greenhouses. Here's the link: http://www.wps.on.ca

Wes, It's nice to see someone else using this simple method. It is fool proof and it keeps the plants protected and dry, which is important in winter. When my T. fortunei gets larger I will upgrade to a larger pale. I am also trying to source out a producer of clear garbage pales to allow light in. ...

Your best bet is a rhapidophyllum hystrix which the hardiest shrub palm. You should have no problem keeping this plant alive in your zone with protection. The easiest protection method is to put a light bulb in a plastic garbage pale that has been flipped over. I have a 60 watt bulb in my pale which...

Yuccaman, I would not worry, rhodos are very hardy. Mine looks similar, but I know that come spring it will look great. I can't wait until spring so I can plant more palms in my backyard and I have over 30 Bananas in the house ready for transplant. Palmettoman, Trachies are hardier then I first thou...

I would buy a harbor freight greenhouse if I lived in the US. Since you are thinking of purchasing an inexpensive one that will hopefully last several years I would recommend a 10' X 12' for the added space if you don't mind paying the extra heating costs. A 8' X 6' can get full very quickly especia...

Phil, I purchased the heating cables at home depot. They are located in the plumbing section, but can be tough to find so, it may be best to ask an associate where they are located. The nice thing about heating cables is that they will turn on automatically when the temperature approaches freezing. ...

anschluss, I will only keep my T. fortunei wrapped when temperatures are below 10C. I am not too concerned about the plant not getting sunlight for a week at a time. When temperatures are that cold there is not much active growth so it does need much energy. The heating cable is your generic water p...

Welcome to the forum! I live in Southern Ontario as well, Toronto to be more precise. I took a road trip down to Broadview gardens in spring and picked me up a good size T. fortunei and a Musa basjoo banana. I was very impressed with there resonible prices and selection of cold hardy tropicals. The ...

That sucks, every time a storm comes near my house I'm at the window watching my bananas hoping the wind won't rip them to shreds. I have been VERY lucky this year and have only been hit by 1 T-strom, but dozens have past a few kilometres to the north. I would stake it up and take off what turns bro...

An 8 second exposure you will be able to see the galaxy very clearly. The Andromeda galaxy is the closest galaxy to the milky way and the largest one in ...

Heres the pic. I built up the greenhouse on 2x12 pressure treated lumber to increase the height to about 7 1/2 feet. I took all of the plants out because of the record highs we have had the past few days. I have not installed a fan yet to draw out hot air, but I have installed automatic roof vent op...

H*me Depot greenhouses
H*me Depot has some great 6x8 greenhouses they are selling. The greenhouses were originally priced at $799, then reduced to $499 and finally reduced to $299. I couldn't resist passing them by at that price so I decided to buy one. It was easy to assemble and the designer is a genius. Some locations ...

My parents were at a wedding today in Port Dover and saw several palm trees that were planted in the ground. I decided to look into it to see if the rumours were true and I found this article. Unfortunatly it does not say what kind of plams they are, but if anyone is in the area be sure to snap some...
