Chamaedorea cataractarum , I bought a pot of these last month for $2.00, They were in a pretty sad state, ( looked like they took some cold damage and then were put in full sun

I sawed the rootball apart and dropped them in the water - No setback at all and growing fast now. Tough Palms!

They are a fast growing palm. Too bad it is not hardy. I have seen some very large ones in Florida and they are a great looking palm.

Some of the data from the California freeze suggest the Silver variant is on par with a CIDP ( at least in areas with warm Summers )

What I meant was not hardy here.
I have tried CIDP and in a normal winter they do survive but we do get cold every so often and they can not survive. I am sure the same would be for the bismarkia

Steve - your cat palm is in water. I have a small pond in my backyard. I have a plant shelf that is about 12" deep. Do you think I could set a cat palm in a clay pot on the plant shelf? and would it survivie?

Should do just fine! , I am using one / two gallon plastic pots with window screen over the drain holes. Also, The Schulz brand aquatic soil works well with these ( pelletized clay - no sediment)

C.elegans does well in water too.

I would love to try one but the temps they are referring to are in the mid 20's and they probably saw temps rise considerably during the day. We just don't get warm enough after a freeze. We more than likely will be above freezing but just.

Since I hacked the rootball apart these have been submerged about 4" below the surface.
Plenty of healthy new roots growing!
