Do you have a Merolae Dioon? I have two and they are BY FAR the sharpest and most painful leaves I have on ANYTHING!!
They make the spines on the "Madagascar Palm" seem like pillows.
How is your "waliak" doing?? Mine is doing good and I THINK (keping digits crossed) that is about to put out a new leaf.
But yea, see about getting a Merolae.

Barb - Thanks for adding the photos!

Wes - I don't have any of the Merolae form, Do have "Palma Sola" & " No. Mexico" Probably wouldn't want to trip and fall on any of them :)
Got a couple more Cycas "Wilailak" in with trimmed fronds for shipping, The roots on these are long! had about 6' on one.
( I guess that stands to reason taking their habitat into account, a couple sources has this listed as C.petraea now -not sure if that is validated yet)

If you ever want to sell one of your "Wilailak" , just let me know. I'll pay you whatever you want. I really like them.
But yea, get a "Merolae" as they are a cool looking Dioon. They have a very cool caudex that looks like it has moss growing on it and the first 6" of each leaf. Mine are from Chumley. All my stuff from him is doing well except the "Ciircanalis" sp?.

Well...You could always buy some from here

http://shop.vendio.com/coontie57/store.html

I like to grow most of mine from seed but this actually worked out cheaper.

I think I might order another $100 worth of stuff from Robert actually. Not sure a Willy will be in my purchase, but I think his caudex size for the $$ is the absolute best.

Pity.

Do you have anyone in the states that you visit? Can always have some shipped there and them drive them back across.
Will probably have some seed coming in, let me know if you want some !

Unfortunately, don't KNOW anyone below the border (other than you folks, ha ha)

Steve, thanks for the offer but I'm way too impatient for seed...except maybe the key limes :)
Prices were sure good on that site, and with the Cdn dollar up...there wouldn't be much pain in buying American.

But if it took 7 days for mail from Toronto (for the Musa), hell, the plant would have a birthday coming from Florida!
Cheers

I'm probably wrong, but revoluta and spinulosum are stunning next to each other.
Also like the camera shooting from the bottom, and the third from the top.
You must've been hanging from the rafters for that last shot.

Looks like 11 fronds? You're right (AGAIN) about odd number of fronds.
Man that's a lot for one plant to put out at a time.

I can imagine how lovely and fresh the air is in the GH.
Everything looks so healthy and the humidity must be like Hawaii!
That floridana has so many new stems, they look like fireplace matches stuck in a base!!!! well done.

Your plants have put on a lot of growth.
They're definitely thriving. I'd spend hours each day puttering around in a GH. Heaven! 8)

Wes, yes, I got them all from Lori, and I'm a happy camper :)
The only one I haven't taken a pic of is the 2-year old Zamia pica variegata...it's been slow to respond despite the same care as the others. But it'll come along (when IT'S ready, ha ha)...

I was really impressed with the size and mass of the root systems from Lori, especially the Spinulosum and the 3 year old Zamia vasquesii.

Cycads

Post by Wes North Van » Sat Aug 11, 2007 12:15 pm

After reading what you all of done with your cycads, I am going out to get some manure and see if I can bring mine to life. Mine loooks sick and it is not growing. I planted it in a 75% sand and 25% compost mixture and it is not happy. I will post a picture later.

Wes, take a hand full (yes, sometimes a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do) and evenly spread it out around the plant. Then water in good. If it is in a pot, make sure you water it well outside (I know the plant probably IS outside but I thought I better warn you) as there will be A LOT of urine come out the bottom of the pot. After the really soaking watering, then every day water it well again. Also, if you have old leaves and are thinking about cutting them off, do it, but if you don't, don't worry about it. However, cutting the old leaves WILL quicken the flush a lot.
I know with my large Taitungensis, if you cut the existing leaves off, you will have a new flush in 21 days. It all depends on what you want, a full sago that is short with lots of leaves, or a taller sago with more trunk but less leaves.
But do me a favor if you do the manure thing, please keep us posted on what your finding.
I might add that the cutting of old flush to quicken the new one is not proven, thats just my opinion.

I will try what you have recommended. I willing to try it because it just doesn't look good.

It is planted in the ground so I will just add around the plant.

Thanks, I will keep you posted.

Wes, (North Van) If you have one of those moisture meters, sink it in to the root zone and see what it says. ( Might be a good idea to rule out the possibility that it is sitting damp or dry before adding anything else.)

What kind is it?

Did you ever get a final ID on that one, Steve?

Zamia vasquezii (3 yrs old, Lori's).
Two leaves flushed (the newest one has five blades, the other--a very small leaf beneath the new one--had six). The pic of the little leaf was too fuzzy to load.

I love cycad leaves, they're so distinctive with their tiny armour points.

Steve it was on page 1 of this thread, and you thought it might be E.natalensis.
Whatever it is, it's stunning.
I'm more amazed by these beauties every time I view them.

West Van Wes, I hope your plant kicks into gear.
Let us know if you got any cow manure, ha ha.
I had always heard NOT to fertilize a plant if it's sick.
Maybe it's just slow/late like some of mine.

Barb, Been too hot here lately for me to keep track of what I've posted
More than likely E.natalensis, going to have to wait for larger leaves to be sure.
Your Z.vasquezii looks good 8) Mine usually grow at a good pace from May to October.

Ya, I hear you Steve.
Heat can suck all my energy out, too.

I'm delighted to hear Z. vasquezii might grow into October...

Hope you get a cool down soon...a rain would be most welcome I bet.
We got our rain last night and the morning today.
I was so thrilled it was cool, I almost ran naked in it. ALMOST. ha ha :?

My other cycas revoluta (storebought this winter) was awfully slow to flush, but here it is.

Image
Image
Image

8 fronds (though I expected 9, ha ha).

Gotta get some new pots. This one's in a cheap clay pot that is falling apart before my eyes.
Touch the pot and you get red all over your hands that won't wash off.
So much for bargain pots...

I was surprised to see that one of my Revoluta is putting out it's second flush in 2 months. First one was only 5 leaves, not sure how many this one is.

We cycad lovers go gaga over a flush, and it's certainly worth the wait some of us endure.
To get a second flush (like most of you do) would be heaven.
These plants are true marvels of nature.

BTW, Lori Pickering of Jurassic Nursery has a new newsletter that details a reprinted article about cycad biology and the symbiotic relationship between the species and various beetles and weevils. It made fascinating reading.
Hope she'll post the newsletter on her member's page (hint, hint, Lori).

Thanks folks. And, yes, Steve, that Trachy has NEVER looked better. :D
