Hello everyone I have been on the road for the past few weeks. I recently was in las vegas for a few days and had time to check out some W. Filifera that another member recommended I see. They were at a place about 50 miles north of vegas. I think it was glendale or something close to that. I was told they have been through some very harsh winters so I took some pics of them and got some seeds. Then I drove here where I am now typing this in foot hill ranch CA. I drove out to san deigo wild park and visited some nurseries on the side of a few mountains. The trip was definatley worth it cause I found a guy with about 4 massive sabal minors. They are ready for boxes and all almost as tall as me one is over 6ft from the ground. He only wanted $90 each! I bought 3 lol. Also he has some huge Butia x Jubaea crosses for $350 each. One is starting to flower thats how big they are. Everything on his property is very cheap, he has some italian cypress That he says are hardy to -5f. I didnt believe him but he says there something special and he guaranteed them to me for 1 year so I bought a few. Last the best thing I found was that he has a few T. Wagnerianus with about 12 inches of trunk for $100 each!! I didnt have enough room so I could only buy ONE! I cant wait just a few more days and I will be home ready to start digging!!

I wish we in Canada had chances like that. We can't drive down there and pic palms up and drive them across the border.

Ok here is a couple photos of some W.filifera that are about 50 miles north of Vegas that have gone through cold spells more than once in there life. They are alive and have green centers. They guys who owns or runs the property says when this happens they do grow back and look healthy by early to mid summer. I was allowed to take seeds from them. They said the palms have been there as long as they could remeber which wasnt really helpful. If your interested in seeds all you have to do is let me know

Its about just as far north but on the other side of the state near Utah.

That is definitely fried.

The palm must be tough to come through that. Did the guys tell you how cold it got last winter?

He did say it was a very bad winter but that it has seen more than a few bad winters for as long as he can remeber. He said they have tried robustas and robusta hybrids but they always die. He ended up growing some from there own seeds and there are 2 or 3 younger ones across the street from it.
