Winter problems

I enjoyed the mild winter we have been getting. But now its cold,windy,snowy. We had some hours of -20C. Winter is not looking so good and its only going to get worse.

Everywere in canada looks fine but we are the only ones having problems.
My last plant may be dead or its dormant?

Any help? anyone else having problems.
Nothing ever does well here.

Yuccaman,

The cold was bound to come...Now we just have to get over the next 8 weeks or so...

Were all feeling it here in the n/east..I don't bother fighting it anymore...

Looks like your rhoddy is feeling the bite of cold temps...and a bit dehydrated?...mine as well...

Tip..It will be fine...Get a big luke warm bucket of water...pour it around the base of your rhoddy..That will give the roots some much needed moisture...repeat this every 3rd day or so...

I am hardening off some windmill palms now...-8C is the lowest temps (garaged) and they seem ok..

I'm planning on putting them in the ground this spring (protected)...

I would not worry, rhodos are very hardy. Mine looks similar, but I know that come spring it will look great. I can't wait until spring so I can plant more palms in my backyard and I have over 30 Bananas in the house ready for transplant.

Palmettoman,

Trachies are hardier then I first thought. Mine has been through -15C a few nights with no protection and no damage. Next year I will test it at -20C to see how it performs. On the banana-tree forum there is a post submitted by a man in Ottawa who's trachy has been down to -22C with no protection. I'm going to send him a message to see if he will join this forum to participate in hardy palm discussion.

I will try your tip Palmettoman. Right now we are having freezing drizzle. Ryan I saw other peoples rhodos and they do great and some are like mine and survive. I have there is a PJM rhododendron which its hardy to zone 4. We had zone 6b temps now and we mostly get this almost every winter so maybe needle palms will do well on south wall. Im pretty sure that needle palm would be able to make it this far in the winter with all the sun.

When its cold out and sunny and you touch the wall on the south side its very warm.

Spring is going to be warmer than normal. Mid april could be like early june. We are going to have an active thunderstorm year. Maybe a good few weak tornadoes to capture vidoes with or take pictures.

If its a warm spring maybe it will come back.

How big are your windmill's?..-20C seems like quite a lick of cold?...but I guess it depends on the species of windmill's and of course how and where you plant em...

No wonder mine haven't been fazed at -8C?

I've never lost one to the cool temps but I have to the summer heat...

If you can..post some pics Ryan...

Sounds like you got a banana plantation happening...I may be interested in purchasing some of those musa basjoos if your selling em...

My T. fortunei is just starting to trunk. I do not know if it will take -20C, but I can GUARANTEE we will find out next year

. T. fortunei laughs at -8C, they can take MUCH colder temperatures. I will have basjoos available in spring and about 20 other musa cultivars. Just let me know what you need and they will be ready for shipping in May.

Palmetto do you have your bananas in the house? Mine are all doing great inside with a south facing window. I`m looking forward to this spring to plant a patch of bananas.

My musa bas. are out in my garage in the "warm/cool room" I created for them...It stays about 6c-14C.

I'm watering them about once a wk...

The musa's are sprouting new leaves..

Like you...I'm really looking forward to the spring and gettin them in the ground etc.

Palms and other hardy's are doing ok..

Now that my palms are hardened off, I'm gonna plan on how this outside protection thing is gonna work?

Any ideas?

John - nice bananas in the living room. Are you single ? I tried the banana in the family room in early fall and my wife blew a gasket. I have to keep it in the basement ..... so sad. I have managed to move (sneak) a number of palm trees upstairs to a spare bedroom for some additional sun.

Op my wife gave up on trying to tell me not to bring palms or bananas into the house. She just shrugs her shoulders? I make it up to her in other ways. They really like the light from the living room and the once a month fertilizer.
