Double headed Butia.
While I was out working today I came across a very rare double headed Butia. I will take some photo's in the morning & post them tomorrow night.

I too am interested in seeing those pics. I know as seedlings if you plant the seed you can get two or three coming out of the one seed.

True mutli-head Butia
If I read this correctly, this is an "above ground" true multi-headed Butia. Some will as Wes states, emerge as mutiples from one seed but grow and root at ground level.
Here's the only one I've heard of growing in Panama City, Florida.
Cheers, Barrie.

Natural candelabra?
Barrie could this be caused by spear pull and other trunks forming after? Very rare indeed!

I think there's more at work here than "spear pull". In fact, I highly doubt that as a contributing factor. If that where the case, we'd have multi-headed Butia all over the place.
Having said that, who knows what effected this particular Butia? Regional climate, coupled with certain events, genetics, health?
Cheers, Barrie.

When I was living up north, I experimented on a spruce tree in an effort to have it fill in better. I split each growth bud into 4 pieces using a scalpel. When I was successful, the split growth bud would produce between 2 and 4 new branches.
I am wondering if the same thing could be done with the palm's spear.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps
