The suspense was killing me...

I wondered how my plants made out over this winter. I think there was one 1 day in Feb. That got above freezing (a 70 year record or something...) I was expecting a few casualties. But everything is as good as expected or perhaps even better. My musa basjoo is screaming to be released from the boxes but we still have some cold ahead of us... My Trachys didn't notice as usual. My washy looked pretty good (I only lifted the box a couple inches and took a photo with my phone) My agave parryi has a couple burns nothing too bad. My yuccas rostratas look great. The big surprise I had a couple tiny Sabal minors I just about killed a few years back and they've been so slow to recover and I really didn't like where they were planted so I covered them no heat and whatever happened happened... We had several days of -30c and colder and they came through unscathed much to my shock... I have a lot ready to be planted but I have at least a month to 6 weeks before they can go out. Probably can start cracking the boxes on the super hardy stuff in another week and the less hardy stuff in about a month when I'm back from Mexico. Once the boxes are pulled I'll post some pictures right now my bakyard looks like a grave yard full of blue tombstones (blue styrofoam)

Nice to hear a success story after reading about so many setbacks for others.

Just the regular blue pot special from my local nursery. I got them before I knew much. I think they were $7 each on clearance. Turns out I had a thermo cube fail I lost 1 banana the others that were alive grew 18 inches over the winter. I let them out of the box for an hour tonight they're bundled up for the snow we're expecting tomorrow.

Great results, curious to know how you protect your agave? Parryi has been a problem as of late for me. Guess I have started getting too cold and wet for just a plastic tote.

What did you use to cover them? I haven't had much luck with my needle palm, I lose a few more suckers every year.

My parryi i just use a small size rose cone with a brick on top. I had a thermo cube (the one that failed) controlling 4 or 5 c9 bulbs so one didn't get any heat and got knocked around a bit. The other 2 look great.

The sabals were the big size rose cone with a brick on top. Still shocked they pulled through not looking any worse for where.

Thanks, for some reason parryi have been dying on me. I placed styrofoam pcs inside the tote but the agaves still rotted. Only my JC Rolsten survived this winter. Luckily I have plenty in waiting.
