Josef welcome to the forum :D . Thank you for posting your photos. I noticed that the trunk looks a lot thicker than a normal T.fortunei.The palm fronds also look a lot larger than normal. Did you get that Trachy from Bulgaria? How old is it? How long has it been planted? Keep us updated on how it does this winter.

Hi and welcome :D
I think that is great 8) I also have the same questions? Where did the seed or plant come from? It looks so nice and has a good form 8)

Also, how cold does it get there in a normal winter?

Hi John and Aaron.
I have palms from north Italy.Planted in ground March 2002.

Winter 2003/04 is very cold - 23.Plant survive with 95% leaf damage but
very good regeneriert./foto small palm spring 2003 and now/

Those are very beautiful and I like the fat trunks.
I would like try leaving mine out to the elements with no cover but im waiting for the root system to be more established a year or 2 older to be able to handle that defolation every year. How do you fertilize it? Do you add any additives before winter? when did you plant them and did you protect them at all the first few years ?

Yes I fertilize since the April with N and from off Sept with K.
I protect all winters against rain and snow.

My Trachy has almost the same truck as joesf, only difference is that mine has just over 3 feet of trunk 5 foot total when including the leaves.
So not as tall as his but I'am sure when mine reaches his height it will look very close to the same, I live close to 2 hours south of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and I had my Trachy shipped from seattle there palms out there have very thick trunks! Here is the website www.palmsnorthwest.com

I will defenetly take some pictures of it and will post them up next spring, a long with my 3 footer witch I had shipped from B.C. Canada.
I use palm tree fertilizer spikes from treehelp.com also use Mycorrhizal fungi and i add a lot of epsom salts.

I planted my 5 footer in full sun and give it lots of water my 3 footer is in a nice sized pot for quick growth.

:D

WOW!awesome pictures!I think we can all agree that trachys have mixed like the domestic dog.Your palm really looks like a, dare I say TAKIL oh god,I said it,well of coarse it could never be takil  however it certainly is not pure fortunei and thats a good thing (not that there is anything wrong with fort)as far as I'm concerned,or it could be wagxfort, whatever it is that is one beautiful palm, that we can all agree on!I am curious what kind of protection you used on this and what"zone"your in?

hardyjim...as the saying goes, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Use the Search function on this site for Josef's name for earlier pics (over the last year or so) on various topics.

He has trunking yuccas, agaves, cycads and palms that'll make your jaw drop.

Josef, that trachy grew a lot this summer. :D
Looks like it is about 12 feet tall.

And those trunked yuccas could not be more beautiful.
The skirts probably keep the trunk warmer than if you removed them.

Hello, beaver, welcome!

Nice pics...great fortunei.
And very nice yucca (rostrata?) (brevifolia?)

Belgium is 50 N latitude, about the same as several of us from BC at Palms North.
The brick buildings likely provide a few degrees improvement, nice microclimate.
