It's finally here! The lows tonight are 33F, and all next week, lows are not supposed to drop below 36F, plus it's supposed to rain tomorrow night and Thursday.. I am planning on planting my Trachy and Butia tomorrow...my grandpa brought a truckload of cow manure to our house that we are going to rototill into our vegetable garden...it is mostly black dirt at this point...should I rototill this into my palm planting sites? I'm really wanting to make transitioning as easy as it can be on my expensive palms, and the Butia is already not looking well:/ I know I've asked questions like this before, but so much of this is on a case-by-case and palm-by-palm basis...thank you for your patience and understanding:)

Thanks! I know, I can't believe it either:) First time the extended forecast isn't showing freezing temperatures! Our average last frost is April 8...so hopefully, we won't have any hard freezes! :P

Don't fertilize for 2 months after planting....

Are your palms already outside?

You may want to let them acclimate(sit outside for a week)-the roots may be shocked going into cold soil...if it is still cold.

Yeah I put them outside in their pots, I decided to push back planting anyway, it's very windy today...actually, the palms have tipped over twice, so I'm not sure if it's a good idea to leave them outside until after this wind stops...

Have you checked with your local extension office to see what ground temps are?

Not yet but that's a great idea...we actually have one here in El Dorado, I'll call tomorrow and check.

You can buy a little thermometer big enough to check 4" soil temps at Wal-Mart...
(in the kitchen section)just make sure to get the one with the right range that is also digital.

Great idea! Since soil temps vary bases on amount of sun etc.

I will do just that as soon as I'm off work! Thanks! Also, anyone know if trachycarpus can handle full sunlight? I know my butia and Washingtonias can, but I'm wondering about the trachy, as the only places suitable to plant it will have at least 6 hours of direct sunlight in the afternoon...:/

Trachies will handle full sun in your area. You may find that they will look better longer if they have a nice micro climate that is protected from winds. Mine really like being close to the house. The ones out on their own always have jacked up fronds.

I moved them outside today to let them acclimate in their pots...However, tonight, the temperatures are supposed to drop to right at freezing (32F, 0C)..will this hurt my palms? I had moved them inside last night because I was concerned, but I decided to move them out again today, it's probably best not to baby them...lol but I'm still concerned...

The palm has no issue with 32f. 10f would see some burn but survivable..
