Couple palm pics from the basement

Post by teebee » Mon Dec 02, 2013 5:32 pm

I have the backyard all boxed up and what wouldn't survive was brought in. I grabbed a pics of a couple.

First pic is a Ravenala madagascariensis (Travellers Palm) I grew from seed its slightly less than a year old. (by a few weeks) 44" tall (by the time its 1year it will be a full 48"
s so 4 feet of growth in a year is pretty impressive.

Second is phyllostachys kwangsiensis just over a year old (also grown from seed) lots of little culms getting to be about 24" now.

Good job germinating and growing, especially the Traveler's.

The travellers palms were super simple to germinate and a super high percentage germinated. Highly recommended.

why am I doing this? I have plants and flower pots all over my house (and now my office too), but I could not resist and ordered some travelers palm seeds from ebay.

Yes, your plant looks very nice. How long did it take to grow so big?

Tavi,

I got my seeds from a gent in austrailia. I soaked them for a day or 2. Peeled off as much blue skin as I could. and then did the zip lock bag method on a heat mat. They germinated within 2-4 weeks and that Travellers Palm will be 1 year old at the end of the year. But to reference my basement is quite warm. And I have lots of light on it 16 about 16 hours a day. I use 2 600w Metal halide bulbs for my plants (these are the same bulbs pot growers use.)

Now if you're just relying on sun light they definitely won't grow as fast.

Here is a picture of some of my plants at the window at work all about the same years 11-14 months old (left to right is Agave Americana, Medjool Date Palm, Travellers Palm, Xmas Palm
