Yucca elata problem?

The last week or so I noticed a change in my yucca elata. It's spear seemed to open up a little and I noticed the newer growth was a lighter color. Today I noticed that the spear is a tanish color like the color of palm leaves when they dry up and die. I'm assuming the spear is dead but I just wanted to see what others thought. I'm not really sure why this would happen, I could understand if it had just gone through winter. I didn't water it this summer but it got a lot of rain this spring when I planted it. I don't have any pictures yet but I can get some if needed. The rest of the leaves are the same color, its just the spear that looks different. I'm hoping someone will tell me that that's what new growth looks like but I'm kind of doubting it. Anybody know what's going on?

Hey I too had a stuck spear on one of my elatas. That was in July. it was brown and rotten. Inside was a backup of green growth. I carefully removed the brown spear. It was rotten so it kinda just rubbed away to reveal multiple leaves which flushed over the next few days. No problem since.
Cause...may be excessive wet in shade.

I'd try to 'unwrap' the dead leaves from the spear and get to the better looking leaves if possible. Keep us updated on its progress.

I unwrapped it way down to a tiny spear and still didn't find any green. I noticed as I unwrapped the leaves were somewhat moist. It is in a full sun location though.

I'm not sure what's going on.....hopefully the elata will grow out of it......give us an update in a week or so.

Thanks Tim. I was hoping to see a trunking yucca soon

It does have a small branch coming off the side if all else fails.

Well, it looks like my yucca elata got spear pull.

Now the only thing I'm wondering is why. We've had a really cool summer. Most days it didn't get above 85. I planted it in the spring and it rained alot for the first couple of weeks. But as I understood it, yucca elatas are pretty tolerant of wet cold conditions. It was planted in very gritty soil (2/3 pea gravel 1/3 sand)

Hi Jeff,

I'm not sure why your Y. elata pulled it's leaf spear.......that doesn't happen here in Massachusetts and we get loads of precipitation (about 4" every month of the year).

The new offshoot will take over.....elatas grow fast......I'm sure it will be mature looking by the end of next summer.
