I started to clean out the garden today and took this photo of the cleaned up Yucca elata ssp. verdiensis (left)....a Yucca intermedia is on the right.

So it's not wise to cut closer...forming a clear trunk?

Hi Barb,

I think you can cut the old leaves off very close to the trunk if you want. DON'T pull the leaves off the trunk as that may cause wounds which may introduce disease, rot, etc... I 'think' the old leaves keep the trunk warmer in winter. When I killed a couple treculeanas it appeared the trunk died first from cold and several weeks later the leaves died since the trunk was dead.

Those treculeanas did not have a dead leaf skirt.

Wow, Tim, this Yucca elata ssp. verdiensis is gorgeous! I have a few seedlings but don't have idea how beautiful this plant is!

Yeah, pulling leaves off causes wounds all right.
Right through gloves...

Good point, Tim, that the dead skirt likely provides cold protection.
But I really love the clear, clean trunks.
And no hiding place for spiders.

Tim, barb, not so sure about the rot aspect of trunk rot. I had a Yucca (Tim it's the southcoast yucca that I sent you) that had a naturally clear 'trunk' (probably properly called a stem since it was only 8" high) that rotted away while the leaves looked perfect above. I have the top saved to see if I can't root it. I assume also that it will come back from the roots?

Most yuccas can or will.

Didn't know that roots would resprout a new yucca.
Heard of the tops growing roots though.

Tim- No idea. My thought is that yes it was the cold that damaged the trunk leading to the rot. We had something like -28C this winter...

Barb- Yes this type of Yucca should come back strongly from the roots...

Damn shame, it was turning into one of my nicer Yucca!
