My Central Asia Garden March Update

Post by igor.glukhovtsev » Sun Mar 17, 2013 7:50 am

Had a chance to check my exotic plants today. There not too many to be shown but still...

The coldest weather registered in December: t min - minus 30 C, t max - plus 9.4 C, t mean - minus 11.6 C. January: t min - minus 20 C, t max - plus 12.5 C, t mean - minus 6.6 C; February: t min - minus 21 C, t max - plus 10.7 C, t mean - minus 5.9 C

Aucuba protection and the plant uncovered:

Palms. I have two palms (Fortune and Waggy) planted in my garden close to a western side of my house. Wheat straw blocks used for building a shelter. No additional heat inside. The palms have been being protected from the 15th November till the 16th March.
The Wagnerianus looks much-much better than the Fortune:

Two Fatsia plants and Phormium tennax (the purple form) were planted close to the north side of my house. This was a second winter for Fatsia and first winter for Phormium:

One more Fatsia plants grows in the garden. There was a pot, some straw mulch and the snow as a winter protection. Yes there is some damage but the plant is alive for sure:

Hi Igor,

thanks for the update. Overall your plants look great. It's nice to see the Fatsia doing well.......they should grow a lot this season for you. You sure do have a lot of Yucca seedlings!! So many.

You have some beautiful varieties there, Igor.
Nice and organized too.

Great agave in that last photo...and of course, the y.rostrata :P

Good to see you're finally getting some warm weather.

Thanks, Barb! Of course my Mom is busy with the tomato seedlings as usually  :

I think it's 1/100 part of a total number... She likes giving them away to our friends  . Never for money. And I pay to a seasonal worker who helps her in growing tomatoes.

Thanks Aaron! It works the second winter in a row. Unfortunately i was not able monitoring a temperature inside. But it looks like the temperature was not too bad in there. Perhaps I have to water the palms ASAP. They look a little bit thirsty...

The Wagnerianus looks much-much better than the Fortune:
I think they all look good; it's just that the Waggie's leaves are shorter and stiffer.
Excellent protection method.

Wasn't it Don in Wichita Kansas who used straw bales to build protection around a palm years ago?
He didn't use any heat either.
Excellent insulation.

Also pleasantly surprised that Phormium looks as good as it does.

Well done, Igor.

Hi Igor,

I use HTML codes to insert the photos. You can use the Img button up top too. You must 'click' on the Img buttom first, then insert the http link to the photo then click on the Img button again.

Here's a web page detailing HMTL codes.

http://www.echoecho.com/htmlimages02.htm
<a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/MA/Seeko ... igwx"><img src="http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/ ... eekonk.gif" alt="Click for Seekonk, Massachusetts Forecast" border="0" height="60" width="468" />

HTML codes (embedding) don't need the IMG buttons.

But maybe that's why all the text after a photo is in color. :|

I don't know if they were covered in snow. Most likely they were. But still...
Yes, we have a whole week warm like the end of April weather....

Tried inserting hhtp. I don't know. I might need to replace my brain...

Please, somebody copy my image, insert it in a message and give me the whole algorithm? Otherwise... I don't know. I wont feel myself a such stupid!

Cursor on photo, right click "save image as"
Open hard drive/download/pic file on computer.
Ctrl-V (to paste it).

Then open photo hosting site (Flickr in my case).
Upload photo to Flickr site (even though it's not my own picture).

Then click on photo in Flickr.
Choices for share come up on screen:
Select "grab the HTML code" after you select which size you want.

starts with <a href BUT ENDS WITH ></a>

so if I insert that entire HTML here, I get this:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8574298611/" title="Magnolia_grandiflora by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8529/8574 ... 60f3_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Magnolia_grandiflora"></a>

Barb, as I understood from your explanation I should upload a pic to a host site (Flickr, Picasa Web etc.) first and then.... I couldn't upload a pic to the PalmsNorth strait from my PC? It's kind of weird... So if somebody has no an account at Flickr or Picasa Web he(she) or she (he) is not able uploading the images?

I wasn't able to do that either.
So I quit trying and bought Flickr...think it's $29 for unlimited photo storage.

Maybe somebody else loads right from their hard drive...HALLOOOOOOO PEOPLE!!!!! ????

Burb, I'm LUCKY man. I have no credit card anymore. I have my "limited" Flickr account but never used it. I mean I don't want to spend my time uploading the pics prior uploading them to the PN shreds. It's time consuming thing I guess.

You have a good point.
I just like having a repository for all my photos without loading up my hard drive.

Maybe another member here can explain how/if they upload pics directly from their hard drive.

Hi Igor,

yes, I upload the photos to Photobucket. Then I use the link from Photobucket to insert it into PalmsNorth. Not many message boards will allow direct upload from the computer.

Will have to ask Jay one day if that's the case.
Maybe virus protection?

PS--Igor, if you take photos with your phone, Erik (Terdal Farm) mentioned that Flickr has a great APP for loading pics from cellphones.

More March update photos. Today was nice and warm day with the highest temperature plus 23 C. Seems like we will get a snow in a couple of days :? Checked my Fortune today - the spears pulled. Caramba! Should get some hydrogen peroxide...

Now simply enjoy some blooming in my back yard:

Checked my plants again. The Trachy looks bad. Put some hydrogen peroxide into a rotted spot last night. Three spears pulled.

Waggy looks much better.

And Phormium plus Fatsia Japonica. They seem are OK.

After the snow melted the flowers look OK.

Igor, I think that T. fortunei will make it even though it is damaged! We have seen Jim's palms regrow even after being trunk-cut.

Igor, from the first photo of the Trachy and Waggie (showing the bales), it appears that the Waggie has bales protecting it from the cold concrete wall too.
But the Trachy didn't get the protection from that cold wall?
Or maybe you had pulled them away for the photo.

Hope the hydrogen peroxide works.

The more I see of Waggies, the more I like them.
