Looks kinda cold over there Jim. Luckily I have only seen a dusting of snow and the one small ice storm. That sequoia is loving these milder winters. I figured you would have some hardier palms out, testing their limits.

I look the exact same Jim. THis time last year I had Tulips and spring bulbs popping.

Never know about the nigra. Are the culms white? Either way it should reshoot from the roots.

Kinda following your lead Jim. Post pics as you uncover stuff. Me? I've left the tops off the protection cages for a while now, but it will be nice to take them completely down.

Hope your Black Bamboo comes back. I moved my potted one out to my garage as it didn't like being in he house.

Yeah, those 2 storms were sure strange.
Last year at this time you were beginning your record heat.

It'll be good to see those beauties uncovered soon, Jim.

Nice to see the structures held up through storms, etc.

Luckily it isn't as cold at my place as the airport...about +7F warmer here.

The Black bamboo should be o.k. I don't think the top was killed back but
I did not cover it on our one really cold(-4F)night,we'll see...it has some serious roots on it!

Look the same there as it does here. Right now anyway! You've not got the great lakes to keep your spring cool, so I expect that you'll have the luxury of your impressive spring warmth soon. Best we have in the forecast is a day that will almost reach 10C (50f). Yikes!

Black bamboo is just not a tough plant IMO. It is beautiful when grown in zone 7 and warmer, but I've yet to see a nice specimen in anything colder than that... Maybe you'll have an advantage with less soil freeze? I don't know. FYI I killed a small one outright in my garden... I'd say it's a notch less hardy than P. aurea.

THis one does have the advantage of being in the ground 2 years as well..... Maybe next year bend it to the ground and toss a tarp on it. Less intensive than the rest of your protection methods id say

Last year it only browned out about 50% with a low of 0(F)
this year we had one night of -4F,most of the damage was actually
because it was very windy -looks like it may resprout from
the branches like last year,just have to wait and see..........
