Queen Palms still growing like crazy: outside for the week

Post by sidpook » Fri Jan 11, 2013 3:38 pm

With the warm, rainy weather i put my two big Queen Palms from the master bedroom to back driveway outside to get some beneficial rain and wind. They are amazingly huge! Best thing is i basically trashpicked them from home depot for 5.99 a piece 2 years ago and they weren't even half the size. Anyone else grow them on here? Do they ever bloom "in captivity"? I think I need to repot them this spring. For such small pots they have grown like crazy......

Whoa.... those are BEASTS........

I had no idea that they could handle such small pots. Sure, some plants do, like some ficus but they slow down.... Ie never grown them, or got the seed i ordered to germinate. Ive read a few times they do ok as houseplants

OMG, Mike, they're HUGE :D
They doubled in size in 2 years from the $5.99 bin at HD?

OK I want your fertilizer SECRET...what do you use?
Probably cow manure.

John's trip to Mexico resulted in some Queen seeds for me...

Nice cat palms too.

Hey Barb, yep flu is on the way out thanks.....It took 6 days though~Ugh! I think that wandering the DC, Philly and NYC subways over Christmas week gave it to me. I basically just give the Queen Palms Miracle Grow and sometimes Epsoma. They do however get a lot of sun, rain and wind in the summer. I love the Cat Palms too, they are really cheap to buy and grow like crazy.

i love these palms because they are sooooo maintenance free. They start out small and just require water and dappled sunlicght in summer. I split them and give tham away to neighbors and they thrive

IT took me a year to get the hang of this one LOL. I couldnt get it to look good. Turns out it doesnt like my tap water, and can take WAY more water then im used too. Took a bit of reading and found out htey live in the "cataracts" of the water falls, or edges of fast moving streams. That means they more then likely like lots of oxygen in the soil and at there roots.

LOL.....I know I know...

On a sidenote, its snowing here...Devil!!!! i thought we could get by another winter without it! As I said on facebook earlier, the only positive thing I can think of with the incoming cold temps is that the dog poop will be well formed and frozen;easy to pick up!
