New years eve garden wander

Post by andym » Mon Dec 31, 2012 6:06 pm

had a wander around the garden yesterday. All the plants not protected are thoroughly soggy Here are some pics
Image

Image
Yucca border nice and dry

Image
My unprotected Yucca Linearifolia sending out fresh growth

Image
Dicksonias are still green...just
Image
Borinda Fungosa with nice blue canes

Image
Some idea of the rain we've had

Image
Yuccas and palms under cover

Image

Image
Acacia Longifolia (seed grown) due to flower this year
Image
Sarcoccaca Confusa in flower with the most powerful scent you can wish for. Anyone grow it ? Quite a hardy plant.

Image
That's it for now sorry for pic quality... a really dull day.

Trachycarpus Nova under cover

Jubaea Chilensis... I could write a book about this plant. A beautiful plant purchased only to find it had no roots  Has taken three years to recover

WOW Andy.........great plants.

The Trachycarpus 'Nova' is really cool for Trachycarpus.......I want one! Is seed available somewhere?

The Dasylirion is way too cool looking......I'm surprised they survive in your cloudy, wet climate.

Tim

I have some Nova I am going to sell next year when they get growing again-let me know if you want one.

You won't have to wait for them to sprout this way :)

Hi Jim,

a 'Nova' would be great............do they really look like Andy's? Wow those have great potential. What's the 'story' with 'nova'? Where is it native to? I hope they are hardy like fortunei and not like latisectus.......gave all those to Bill. Let me know what you want since I have a garage full of plants I don't need but can't kill.

Tim heres the Nova back in March '09
Image
Three years on and two Cold winters later

Image
The leaves droop like spiders legs

Image
Did notice more leaf damage as the plant grew. Decided to put a cover on this year... just as well as the trunk would have been quite wet and more susceptable to a freeze.

Hi Andy,

it appears the leaves were green-er when young. The leaves appear blue-ish now like a principes?

Tim

Garry introduced some of these but I think the bigger ones were an accident
as the seeds were originally sold as Princeps=my theory has always been that
Nova is possibly a hybrid between Fortunei and Princeps=Garry has found some other variation too.

I have at least 2 kinds of Nova, one Garry labeled as E and the other D or something like that....
when the time comes we can look at each and see which features you prefer (if different)and I will send
you one or both-you have sent me enough stuff that I think I owe you a couple anyway :)

Hi Jim,

thanks for the offer.........how hardy are these? I hope they are not like latisectus? Who's got a large one?

Hi Tim.... not many large ones around yet. Heres a nice pic of three good sized one at Pan Global Plants when I visited in August last year.
Image
Inside a polytunnel(much warmer) these palms maintain their elongated petioles.... mine are somewhat shorter although its early days yet :D
BTW the under sides of the leaves will have a blue hue but green atop.

Thanks Mike :D The mild weather we have been having will disappear by the weekend to be replaced by snow. Forecasters predict this cold snap will last into February

Tim

I think in general they may be less hardy than Fortunei...that said,
some of the ones on the porch did not pull while Tesan and Takil did-
go figure.

They may have been missed with the watering can though so you never know.

One thing that has been reported is that even if they pull, they usually recover fast
as they are said to be the fastest growing Trachy-not sure how these particular ones compare.
