Christmas Palm Wish List :)

Post by Jay-Admin » Mon Dec 10, 2012 4:55 pm

Wow! It's almost Christmas time again.

Where does the time go? Not long ago I remember sitting out in the
hot sun drinking some beers and now it's cold and not too sunny out. :(

Anyways let's have some fun. What's on your Christmas wish list?
Can be palms, yuccas etc.

For palms.

Needle Palm - Rhapidophyllum hystrix
Mazari Palm - Nannorrhops ritchiana

Yuccas.

Good size Y.Elata

Of course there's many more I would like. :)

I don't want to be too greedy. :)

It would be nice to get a bamboo palm finally...

I'm really maxed out on palms and plants....but I still plan on getting a Candy Cane Palm from Jungle Music when they have more in. Also might get a Blue Hesper from Phil as well. I bought some Blue Hesper seeds, but so far they haven't germinated and it's been almost 2 months. :(

Jim,

I LOVE that plant that you posted pic of. Saw a very small almost dead one at Lowes but it wasn't marked down at all so didn't buy it. It looked like they allowed it to simply dry up. Very cool though.

All I want is everything that's in boxes outside to make it till spring without my intervention. No repairs to be done at -30C under heavy wind. I also wish you all the best whatever you celebrate. I don't post here very often but I read everything that you post and I like it a lot.

:) :D :)

i wish I get some inspiration, some time and some spare space in my garden pushing me to create some nice and warm bed for my numerous yucca and agave seedlings. A needle palm would be an asset. :D

Okay, I have put some thought into this..
Phoenix theophrasti
Bull Needle Palm, the trunking male
A larger Jubaea chilensis, mine are both strugglin' strap leaves
Yucca faxoniana
Yucca madrensis

and

Lightning to strike down my maple tree so I can plant one of my Texas live oaks in its place, Quercus fusiformis. And if lightning also strikes down my tilia tree I wish for a Daphniphyllum macropodum tree to replace it:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8267377490/" title="Daphniphyllum macropodum by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8063/8267 ... 1809_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Daphniphyllum macropodum"></a>

Now, if you have anything on anyone else's list, we should all consider doing a 'gift exchange" of plants!!!!

Scott, my blue hesper seeds I had given up on and reused the pot for another plant, only to discover after about ten long months... a blue hesper palm had sprouted. And contrary to how most palm seeds are supposed to be germinated, this seed was obviously BURIED in the soil after i had added another plant to the pot. That was seven years ago and now my Blue hesper is experiencing its first year and winter outdoors!! good luck and much patience, Scott!

I see Daphniphyllum macropodum shows zone 7-9 for where to grow.... would I kill it in michigan? :-) I have a feeling if I protected it that I would be fine, but if it goes to any decent size that I may be looking at building a greenhouse over it. That foliage would complement my banana patch next year so well.

Edit: just found this
Cultivation details
Succeeds in any good soil, tolerating lime but perhaps not suitable for very chalky soils[11]. A useful plant for moist shady positions[11]. Dislikes cold drying winds. A very ornamental plant[1], it is hardy to about -20°c[184]. Plants have withstood 30° of frost at Kew Gardens, but prefer shelter[11]. Very closely related to D. himalense and possibly no more than a sub-species of that species[11]. The flowers have a pungent aroma[182]. They are produced in racemes on the previous year's wood[11]. Dioecious, male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.

Good to -20??? Celsius? That's -4 F, which would make me thing any sort of basic protection would see this thing through a michigan winter maybe??????

Thanks for the encouragement Adam..I'll leave them alone then. Guess I'm used to growing Mexican Fan Palm seedlings and almost watching them sprout from the dirt in as little as two weeks.

I have my Blue Hesper pots in same greenhouse inside as my Sealing Wax palm seedlings I'm currently growing in there.
