Watering potted yuccas outdoor

A colleague of mine keeps yuccas on the balcony, even during winter, and they get very cold temperatures. Do you water them during winter or keep'em dry until spring like cacti?

Water them when theyre extremely dry, and when the temp is above 0C/32F. Im sure Jim or Tim will pop in to corroborate that.

It depends on the winter temps,I wouldn't water them if freezing temps are expected.

And when you do,they need to be dry before the next cold spell.

In a cold climate they will not dry out fast enough...

I just went through something similar with most of my potted Trachys....

I watered them on a mild day as the low in a few days was supposed to only be 28F

It got down to 22F and then 20F the next night.....I had 25 palms pull.

W insists on potted Yucca rostrata coming in for the winter, but I think they can be left out under an overhang where they will be dry (except for my water when warm). Zone 7 here.
Who is right?

I had bamboo seedlings freeze for a few nights. The pot was frozen at least twice and they survived -7C those nights. Im sure if the Yucca was kept dry it would be fine but may be "better safe then sorry"?h

Incredible! What kind?
My y.rostrata were SOOOOOO expensive, I wouldn't risk it.
All but the 3 planted and heated with C-9's come into a cold building where it never freezes.
But then I'm in a 5b/6a.

I had 25 palms pull.

How sad.
Enough proof for me.

Keep them dry, if they are exsposed too the weather.

Who is right?

My friend that sells desert plants, leaves all his bigger yuccas, cactus, agave in the pots outside all winter. Zone 6.

So you guys are saying that potted yuccas can withstand long time without watering? Is it possible they go dormant for as long as cacti?

They will get all the water they need from the outside weather. They come from places with very dry winters, many yuccas only get rain in the summer. Outside in the winter weather they will not need any extra waterings.

I wouldn't water the Yuccas anymore.......if the lower leaves start to turn brown you can give some water. I don't think you can underwater a Yucca
