Post by lucky1 » Thu Sep 06, 2012 12:05 pm

Stumbled on this.
They're actually doing "sting operations"

I think they are out of control!

It also says plant materials, what about funiture...Pisses me off! And what about seeds! So to send yuccas seeds I need a license? Give me a break. :x .

They're saying that the small unlicensed guys are responsible for disease transmission.
Never thought about furniture...good point, Aaron.

I doubt seeds are an issue; I believe bare-root plants with soil (improperly removed) could transmit disease to other areas.

We all just declare "gift"?

All these rules just lead up to more government oversight...and fees/licensing.
Which adds to bureaucrat jobs.
And down the road, inspections from some turkey in a shiny new truck.

You've gotta be in British Columbia to see the myriad levels of government bureaucracy.

It's all getting insane. :x

Will that work? "gift"
And I hate that they say they will bust the buyers, like if we can tell the sellers are legit on ebay.

Soon a person will need a license, too have children, play sports, or go into another state. And some people will think this is justified. I think those people that are so scared of everything should lock themselves in a closet. I prefer education over control.

Don't get me started on bureaucracy, I work at a University (i.e. a for profit institution) and the levels of crap you have to go through to get things done is insane. Some oversight is needed, no one is arguing that it isn't, but too much and you lose efficiency. Licence to have kids? What's next a licence to wed? Oh wait...

So, my opinion: Regulation of plant shipping- Necessary. Food supply is too important to mess with. However, within North America I think it is pointless, similar to within the EU. But, when you ship plants from one continent to another, then you need to be on guard and the regulation does need to be tight.

Edit- Agree on the education bit, I think the problem is that the people making decisions are not educated on the potential problems that could arise... And don't get me started on the trend of belittling experts for political gain (i.e. when people say stuff like 'so-called experts' in regards to cliamte scientists... THEY ARE THE EXPERTS  AHHHH!)

a few years ago when I went in vacation in US I had 2 apples for the kids to eat on the road. They found them at the border and they looked at me like I was a criminal. I had to throw them in a garbage bin right there at the border crossing. The funny thing is that I had 2 more with a made in usa label, and they said that those are OK even though they were bought in Canada.

2 apples for the kids
That reminds me that our California oranges were confiscated at the Canadian border years ago.
the Canadian constabulary must've thought they could infect Canada's humungous citrus crop.
within North America I think it is pointless
Exactly, Paul.
Will that work? "gift"
As long as it doesn't look like a 3-foot tall plant, marked "this side up", and "live plant"
Years ago, I wondered if I had to get an import permit (as with my order to Australia for a Wollemia nobilis) for RPS seeds (I didn't need one for seeds, but remember the "worm" that wormed its way out of that Jubeaa seed this winter?) :x
the levels of crap you have to go through to get things done is insane.
In all things Canadian it seems, Paul.
BC has, over the last few years, been striving to be the paperwork/fee/delay capital of Canada.
And it'll only get worse with a BC NDP gov't next May
I should have deleted that last sentence, but to hell with it 'coz it's the truth.

On a lighter note...
when they go to sleep
Do they ever sleep, Jim?

Oh, Barb, they never sleep. One thing I would tell about our phytho controlling people - it's enough giving 50 bucks for making them blind in front of "the subject" to be inspected... I mean it's not good but sometimes you know it helps 'cos this local bureaucracy... They have no knowledge, motivation, social guaranties and etc. Very sad.

giving 50 bucks for making them blind
Really, Igor???? holy cow!
That'd probably lead to a couple years behind bars here...more than drug smugglers get.

Can't imagine that would work with mail-order.
Too bad.

Packed my back pack and going to Italy eating spaghetti and sea food, drinking Italian wine, taking some pictures and flirting with some girl . One week vocation. Hope to have a business trip to Texas in October and X-mas shopping in London later on. Bye-bye every one!

I understand the reason behind the law, but I think it would be easier just too post or give a link to a web site that would explain what a person should or should not do when sending plants across the country, and no I don't have a problem with the laws when sending plants across borders.
But it is crazy too make a person get a nursery license just to send a yucca cutting and how would this stop the problem? Nurseries send problem plants all the time.

I wish there was a way too stop the problems of sending plants through the mail, I just don't think this will help? :?

I still think there'd be no problem with sending a yucca cutting, marked as "gift".

But maybe different border crossings read the laws differently.
