Anyone have any experience with these. Although not cold hardy they look really cool, very prehistoric looking plant.

One or two years?

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Mon Jun 19, 2006 11:55 pm

Aaron I will be hopefully selling some of what I have in a year or two. The market here is still so perenial "flowers" and plants. I think it will be hard to change attitudes regards to cold hardy YUCCAS first of all, never mind cold hardy PALMS. I will be planting a select few of my seedlings each year two to 3 year olds to see how much protection if any they need. I am looking forward to finding out for myself what will grow here :D and what needs protection for our cold snaps zone 6b 7a. I`m looking towards the future and futhering more cold hardy YUCCAS and PALMS.

Hey John, Did you give the owner at the flower farm a list of yuccas to order in for next year? We have to keep bugging him since he seems like he's interested in bringing some in. :)

Regards,
Jay

I hope that you have some success. The nursery where I spend between $200 and 400 per year is not interested in ordering in any Zone 4-5 Yuccas or any bamboo. I seem to be the only one interested and they are not ordering in one or two of a specific plant.

Jay I talked to the owner Barry, very nice guy by the way. I asked him for some needle palms for next spring looks promising.I didn`t ask him about any Yuccas. He brings his orders up from California so there should be alot of Yuccas he could bring up next order.

Yuccas

Post by Jay-Admin » Tue Jun 20, 2006 9:49 pm

John, I hope he brings in some yuccas. :D I talked to him about some yucca elata and rostratas when i was delivering some of his stock before his grand opening. He probably forgot about it. I'll have to ask him again next time if he's around. :)

Jay

Please let me know if that nursery brings in some needles. I would take a drive up there for those. By the way I am probably going to be in yours and Jay's town in the first week of July.

Same here Wes if you have time to stop by i can show you what i'm growing as well. Send me a pm when your on your way up here. John, that would be great if you could ask him to bring some yuccas up here. :) Have you been by the house off of clifton rd lately? I drove by with my wife today and he has some awesome trunking y. recurvifolias and huge clumps of Opuntias growing. Lots of palms and i noticed a trachy in the ground there also. His yard is looking awesome!

Jay

I will let you know for sure. I would really like to see what you have growing up there. I believe Kelowna is mild enough to grow many different things like palms and yuccas long term.
I should know what days I will be up there early next week.
