There's a "fine line" between potting up too early and too late.
Finally had some time to get it done.
7 Brahea nitida, germinated 3 months ago in a 4 litre ice cream pail:

No root competition now:

Next was the T. princeps from Garry...and here's what it looks like when you wait too long to pot up from community pots:
Unlike many palms, these had fibrous roots right at the top of the soil line.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7426193402/" title="003 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7251/7426 ... 785167.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="003"></a>
A bit of delicate untangling of lots of fibrous fleshy roots, and they're potted up:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7426187032/" title="005 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5326/7426 ... 013882.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="005"></a>

Leaving the toughest job to last, the P. dactylifera "Deglet Noor" from dates, germinated this winter:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7426180816/" title="007 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7131/7426 ... d08e4d.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="007"></a>
Knew these would have long roots, but holy cow, 12 to 16 inches long, all tangled up:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7426156598/" title="008 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7268/7426 ... ea6f73.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="008"></a>

I always think plants will get hurt when I separate them from community pots.......most do fine after separation......good thing!
I just separated some Y. arkansana v freemanii x reverchonii-thompsoniana seedlings and here's what they looked like after I pulled them apart.

yeah, Tim, it's so tough to know when...some people say wait until there's two leaves on palms.
Then we struggle with separating roots....aaaargh!
Those yucca are fabulous Tim...great looking root development.
Good work.

I was separating Eucalyptus yesterday.....boy.....I didn't like doing that.....too many seedings planted too close together. For some reason I need to keep every seedling alive even if I have too many!

That must've been a delicate job, Tim.
