A bit of everything...

Couldn't stand being indoors anymore and since it's mild for--wait for it--two days  time to get some of the boys outside for some air and a drink:
I'll be sorry tomorrow when I have to drag the buggers back inside.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801360688/" title="004 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7178/6801 ... e251_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="004"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801360678/" title="003 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7069/6801 ... 1935_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="003"></a>

The overwintered geraniums were starting to grow...too bad I have to cut all that stuff off.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801360674/" title="002 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7041/6801 ... aa5d_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="002"></a>

Noticed that some idiot (moi) had repotted this little C.humilis cerifera last Fall, not noticing that the soil level settled too low.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801360696/" title="005 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7067/6801 ... 9b79_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="005"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801360702/" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7050/6801 ... d229_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="006"></a>

So, time to repot it, much happier now:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801365756/" title="019 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7060/6801 ... 4c14_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="019"></a>

Meanwhile the dog's looking for that pesky squirrel that's been driving her nuts.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801365730/" title="015 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7047/6801 ... 6c3a_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="015"></a>

And the Quail are hiding in the junipers...(notice the buds in foreground of the Star Magnolia)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6947472505/" title="011 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7044/6947 ... 96c1_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="011"></a>

The Yucca filamentosa look like crap AGAIN

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6947472479/" title="008 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7185/6947 ... 9f8d_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="008"></a>

This one always wants to be FIRST...

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6947472465/" title="007 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7050/6947 ... 606f_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="007"></a>

Deer have been eating all the tips off the variegated Euonymous

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6947472491/" title="009 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7197/6947 ... e6c4_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="009"></a>

Cherry buds are fat:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6947472515/" title="013 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7054/6947 ... fe89_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="013"></a>

Pear spurs look good:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6801365714/" title="014 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7186/6801 ... cd02_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="014"></a>

The Japanese Maple has never held its dead leaves until March...probably because Fall was so dry?

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6947472511/" title="012 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7182/6947 ... 1855_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="012"></a>

I'm a happy woman...got my hands dirty, puttered outside all afternoon.
Monday it's getting cold again

Hi Barb,

great plant collection!

What's the Yucca-ish looking plant in photo 1 (variegated??).

Your filamentosas need to be replaced with your Y. rostratas! Y. rostrata is the easyist plant out there! I love them. They require no maintenance at all except for winter moisture protection in my area. I haven't cut 1 leaf yet.

Looking great, both of you! I think we all made it through winter in good shape this year.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

That's an Agave, which one I don't know.
here's a 3 yr old pic; it grows like it's on steroids!

Your filamentosas need to be replaced with your Y. rostratas!
I'd give my eye tooth to replace them with rostratas.
But that area gets the really cold northwest winds in winter (see the y.filamentosa damage?)
rostratas would be toast in one year.

I'll just have to enjoy looking at yours...man, that is soooooooo beautiful!
Yours have the fence that adds to a microclimate too.
... can't risk using up my last rostratas there.

Yup, Aaron and Erik, looks like we all made it...including our friends in Europe who suffered that brutal cold.

Nice barb! Everything looks good....

So.... how can you manage to make Japanese maple survive there? DOnt they like cool and wetter conditions? Ya know, that arent semi desert  Same with the magnolia (stelatta?).

Is it a green leaves variety?
It's a gorgeous burgundy colour...this is the ONLY pic of it in my ~5K photos

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/5104803237/" title="DSC04034 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1187/5104 ... 9ded_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="DSC04034"></a>

Just a fluke that I planted it on the east side of house.
That's probably the ONLY place it would grow here.
Even the birch beside it is now dead.
Plus it's right beside a downspout :D

The magnolia is another story entirely.
Brought it w me from Vancouver eons ago.
Despite junipers shading the ground beneath the stellata, it's only grown a foot in all that time.
the first year we arrived was a -30C winter...both the stellata and I thought we'd die

Tim, I do think that fence makes all the difference in the world for your y.rostratas.
Plus that I think you're a 7b :P

Thanks everybody!

Barb
