I live in Jersey City, NJ right across the river from NYC, and I must say that this was the winter that never was (so far... fingers crossed). Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and only have a few palms indoors, but was wondering if anyone had any growing outdoors this winter? I'm imagining any Trachy would have made it easily thus far with absolutely zero protection. I think we've only been below freezing at night this entire winter maybe 5-8 times (and not by much).

I think TimMA (in Mass) is closest to you.
But even we Canadians have Trachies growing outside.
And unlike you, we had winter, albeit mild.

In British Columbia's interior, Canada -- where it gets cold (usually) -- this is how some are protected:

I'm in Massachusetts just south of Boston and east of Providence. I'm not aware of any unprotected Trachy's around here. I read on the HardyPalm board that someone near NYC but on the Conn. coast had an unprotected Trachy outside this winter and it did OK. There's another guy who posts YouTube videos of the Trachys at the botanical garden or zoo in NYC. Those are unprotected too.

I visited another grower of palms today who live in the next town from me and his unprotected Washingtonia robusta looks pretty good (just kidding):

Skutch, welcome to the forum. There are some essentially unprotected T. fortunei, Sabal minors, and even a B. capitata in southern NJ. I believe that one of the places is called Palmyra?
