When do Washy Robusta start the second leaf

Post by Kansas » Thu Apr 27, 2006 9:30 am

I have about 20 Robustas that SHOT up very quick. The one leaf on all are any where from 7" to 9". The trunks are about the size of a toothpick.
But when does the second strap leaf start????

Kansas how long has it been since your W. robusta have sprouted with the first strap leaf? I had 2 leaves after 3 weeks in the incubator. 7"to 9" inches seems alot for the first strap leaf? Kansas please post a photo so we know what you are talkin about.

I am about as dumb about posting pics as I am about growing palms.
Not sure how to do it.
But tehy have been the single leaf for about 3 weeks now. So really, any time now?
Also, I have about 50 Fortunei trees that about the same stage. I must say, I like the looks of the Fortunei much better than the Washys.
My Phoenix just sproated the leaf TODAY!!! So excited.
Okie, tell me if you think this will work....
I had many seeds of Butia Yatay, Hystrix, Thrithnax, Nannorrhops and some others that were taking a very long time to pop. Today, I pulled all of them out of the seed starting mix and am soaking them longer, probably 24 hours. Then I am putting them in a seed starting mix AND Perlite at a 40% Seed Starter - 60% Perlite mix.
Then over a heat mat. Think I will have better luck??????

Kansas all of those seeds you referred to take a long time to germinate never mind sprout. I have had the best luck germinating long term "6 months or more seeds"with vermiculite and glad small storage containers just enough moisture with a hand held sprayer at least 4" deep and easy to pot up. Kansas don`t get impatient like I did they will eventually pop and you will be proud to say you grew it from seed 5 or 10 years from now!
John :D

ps the heat mat is a must for germinating most seeds 14 hours on 10 hours off.

Well Great news. After the sun hit the Washys just right, I noticed I actually DO have a second leaf starting on one of them :)
As I took the seeds out to re soak, I did notice that 2 Hystrix had popped. One had a good root starting and the other has a white spot on it sooooo!!!
And I also noticed a white spot on one of my Butia Yatay!!!!!!!
I resowed tem in the Perlite & Seed starter I wrote about.
WISH ME LUCK!!!!!!
