I was house/cat/pond sitting my grandmas house again a few weeks ago, and her garden was in full swing. What really stood out was her Rhododendron ( your hawthorn pic reminded me barb!). Its an evergreen species, and its been there for " at least 15 years". I dont know any name or antything about it, other that it was covered in flowers, and it bloomed before tulips, clematis ( the non hybrid kind) dandilion, any iris or lily, lilac, dogwood.... it might have been one of the first flowers of the season taht I seen!

Jesse- almost certainly it's a R. 'PJM':

Thy bloom early and are very hardy. It's a small leafed variety (lepidote) that is almost as common here as Rose-of-Sharon!

***PS - My Exbury Azalea survived. Its leafing out as we speak!
