New Yuzu citrus and Saanichton kiwi plants

Post by Cameron_z6a_N.S. » Wed May 18, 2011 4:23 pm

I just received an order from BC, and unpacked/planted a pair of Yuzus and a m/f pair of Saanichton kiwis (they're the same fuzzy ones which are at the grocery store, but are a bit hardier). All of the plants are 1 gallon size.

Yuzus:

M/F Saanichton kiwis:

Planted in a sheltered area:

Hopefully I can harvest some fruit from both types in about 3 years!

Hi Cameron,

great plants......what zone are they rated? Will you protect?

Thanks, Tim! I think they're both rated for a zone 7a, although there is a lot of different info out there. I'm definitely protecting them during the winter! If they survive the first winter I'll set the kiwis up with proper stakes, etc.

Great looking mail order plants, Cameron.
Obviously ordered from a good company.

Looked up Yuzu citrus.
It's also big in the essential oils market.
And SAKE...
Cool!

Hi Cameron,

I started some of your seed tonight.....I've been way too busy......I would like to have started 1st week of May but I sowed the Protea and Callistemon tonight. Tomorrow I'll get to the other seeds. Sowing late may have worked out since it's been cloudy and cool all of May.....not good for seed starting.

Good for you! :D

I have had a potted Yuzu for about a year now. It just sat there and did nothing, neither grow nor die. Lo and behold, it flowered late winter. Now its flowering like crazy, flushing, and there are about 7 Yuzus hanging on it.

I was going to plant it outside, but am balking. I look forward to seeing how yours does. You are correct that hardiness info is all over the map.

Tim, I was a little angry at the lack of Yuzu growth!! Something had been eating the new Yuzu leaves, as well as some of the kiwi leaves. Hopefully I can find out what it is before the next growing season starts.

In the middle of the winter, my minimal protection fell off of the male kiwi plant. I didn't notice for a few weeks, and during that time, the temps on my deck reached -17 C (probably -15 C in the garden). I figured the kiwi was dead (at least the above-ground portion), so I didn't bother to put the protection back up. There was a bit of mulch over the roots, as well as some leaves.

The female plant is still protected, but I nicked the bark of the male plant the other week, and it was green. Today, I noticed some buds emerging! There has been a cold snap here lately, but I will be checking on the female in a couple of days. Here is the male (the buds are a little hard to see):

Thats pretty good you got those kiwi to make it. I think theyre zone 7? That pic shows it had no problem this winter. Thats a crap load of buds ! I just got some hardy kiwi (issai and A. akolomitka "arctic beauty").

Shall we have a Kiwi race? :D

Jesse, you won't have problem with kolomikta but the Issai would be a goner in your climate. I planted three varieties of Aktinidia arguta including the Issai. The growth above the snow level is dead. Good luck anyway.
Cameron, I gonna plant my kiwi in a few days.

Ive read conflicting reports about "Issai". Anywhere between zoned 2 - 5 (the tag on mine says zone 4). I also read that they can die down, but regrow from the roots/snowline (just no flowers or fruit). Ive also read that even if the vine doesnt die down, youll loose the buds with a late frost (much liek apricots). KNowing my luck the "hardy" one will die, and the "not hardy" one will survive lol.

Canadianplant, good work on getting your own kiwis! My uncle in Scarborough has a large kiwi vine (it has practically turned into a tree, around 15' tall) that produces many fruits each year. I think it's an Issai if I remember correctly.

Tim, I think the Yuzus fared worse than the kiwis. The protection came off of one Yuzu in the middle of the winter, and it's definitely dead. Both plants were grafter onto P. trifoliata, so there's a chance that maybe I can end up with some Poncirus at least.

Igor, good luck with your own kiwis!

Too bad about the Yuzu for sure. Always wanted someone to come up with a zone 5 hardy citrus... Of course I can't even grow Poncirus, so it's not looking good for zone 4b/5a!

Hey Paul, you'll have to do a mass planting of Poncirus to find a hardy one!

I fully uncovered the kiwis and Yuzus yesterday. Both kiwis are in great shape, and both have new buds forming. I checked the Yuzus, and there IS green wood that was buried underneath the mulch and leaves. It's hard to tell whether this is Yuzu or Poncirus, as the divide is pretty close to thr graft, but I'm hoping that I at least end up with two P. trifolata. You can also see some Monkey Puzzle seedlings in the corner:

Tim, the Monkey Puzzles did alright after the winter, considering that they were outside in that container for all of it!

Here is a pic of some of the green wood on the Yuzus/Poncirus:
Image

It seems to start right at the piece of tape, which is where I believe the graft is. Time will tell!

Hi Cameron,

great photo showing the Poncirus 'green' trunk and the dead Yuzu trunk. It shows us how much hardier Poncirus is.

I was away for a week, and returned to find a lot of new growth on my plants. One of my Aucubas is blooming (after less than a year in-ground!), as well as some good Eucalyptus seedling growth, and new leaves starting on the "Hardy Chicago" figs.

I also spotted some buds forming on the green portions of both of the citrus trees. In the worst case scenario, it looks like I will at least have Poncirus growing!! The buds are hard to see:

great news with the Poncirus..........too bad the Yuzu portion didn't survive. I hope my Citrumelo is hardier than Yuzu??

Your Aucuba should be all set now and be much more established for the next winter.

How much growth are on your Euc seedlings?? Mine are still tiny.

Tim, I think that Citrumelos would be somewhere in the same hardiness range as Yuzus. Maybe the main problem with mine was that they were planted out in August. My Euc seedlings are still small too. Here is a pic of some E. pauciflora ssp. niphophila (almost the same hardiness as ssp. debeuzevillei):

Here's an updated shot of the growth on both kiwis:

You can see the growth on the Poncirus (Citrus) trifoliata. Beside the one on the left is a Passiflora caerulea, which unintentionally survived the winter with mulch protection. These plants have grown another 6-8" or so since this pic was taken:

Here are the kiwis. The tallest tendril on them is around 8-10':
