T. fortunei flowering zone 6b Canada

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Tue May 03, 2011 7:31 pm

I hope my palm is a female that is flowering this year. I planted it in March 2008 along with two other 15 gal. Trachy`s
Although none of my other Trachy`s are flowering this year. If it`s a female inflorescence I would like to hand pollinate it with by going to Vancouver or someone from our site that has male Trachy pollen. I will know soon what is happening with the Trachy inflorescence. Anybody want to guess as to what I`ll end up with?

John,
Congrats...won't guess but it'll be great to see that inflorescence.
I think some of the folks on the Coast would know.
Barrie had some photos a couple of years ago of his inflorescence.

Exciting!
I hope my big ole' Trachy does that soon.
But it may be in menopause after 35 years

Keep us updated please.
Barb

PS--about bloody time the weather has gotten warm, huh?
Now if only hockey on TV would end, LOL.

We had 19, gorgeous, but I don't get excited about ONE day.
Wearing a light jacket today AGAIN.

Oh boy, we sound like dinosaurs when we say "I remember how nice the weather was before the climate changed" :toothy1:

Make sure the hockey games don't keep you from taking a new pic of that Trachy as the flower comes on.

Excellent! Very nice gardens you have there. Such a great time of year. I just noticed out back that two of my Cordylaine Australis are flowering for the first time ever. Can't wait to see them. I'll post pics.

Update May 10th 2011

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Tue May 10, 2011 5:31 pm

Here is an update on my T.fortunei flowering. It looks to be a female. The first pic is a close up of one of the flower spathes. Interesting that the bottom of it is yellow. Maybe a self seeder? None of the other Seed pods have this trait. Maybe just wishfull thinking on my part?

Wonderful that you've got 7 seed spathes.
You're way ahead of mine for development...so mine must be a male

Kidding, guys!

Lol some adolescent palm tree humor. Barb you could probably check the inside of your spathes by pulling the covering back like banana peel and putting it back over after. I did this with mine a few days ago and had no damage to the covering. It`s like Christmas can`t wait to see what`s in the present. :D

Plans for yet another garage.

What if my flower spathe isn't "ready" when we receive pollen?
This is all kinda new to me.

Barb it`s all new to me to. I`m wondering what the duration of viablity of the female flower is. There must be a time limit on Trachy fertility? Mine are branching out now. I`m thinking yours will be doing the same within the next week. Another garage I hope not  . Got to sell a lot of the bigger palms to make room for the young uns.

Ya, there's gotta be a time limit.
Otherwise why would women be checking their calendars when they want to get preggie?
Somebody must know.
make room for the young uns.
And from all this pollen talk, there could be a lot of young uns.

Did you hear Vernon's low tonight is 3C?
Sounds like the rest of May will be mostly at or below normal temps.
Only 4 months until the palm hut goes up again.

I feel cheated of spring this year.

Hey John, this springerlink techie summary says Trachy pollen viability is anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.

http://www.springerlink.com/content/g4w774071j131965/

So do we increase relative humidity and feed it some sugar beforehand?
Or just a rum and coke?

Lol  Get them feelin good. The male pollen is viable for two weeks. I wonder how long the female flower is viable to accept the pollen to produce seed?

Hey John, from your May 10th pic, it looks like the flowers are hanging down (mostly).
So maybe it's a male?

We'll need to keep taking pics and comparing from, say, a horizontal picture angle?

Sounds like pollen is viable up to about 2 weeks from the few internet sites I read.
