Very beautiful! And nice size, too.
My Little Gem got brown all over, but first winter, pretty tough weather, etc...
I still have hope, because the shoots are flexible...

little gem may be a tad less hardy than Edith Bogue. I'll have to check with Bill MA who lives in the bordering Town from me. He's got a couple big ones he brought up from the south. This was their 2nd winter outside.

great tim! i like grandiflora too. i planted one two weeks before,small plant about 50 cm high. also i have grown 3 edith bogue from seeds. this one i've planted outside is not edith bogue and i think less hardy. it has some leaf burned. if it dies in winter, edith bogue comes to it's place.

thanks for the report.
Southern Magnolia proved themselves hardy around here. They did better than most other BLE--equal to Ilex; only Boxus was perhaps better (although I've seen a few of those dead). Leaf damage like yours, but even young ones survived.

Looks GREAT!!! I think it'd survive here in my climate unprotected. Lake Michigan keeps my temperature up a good amount in the winter.
Where can I buy a good size one of these online?

can you take a roadtrip down south? I do that to bring things home from Texas. If you can drive down to even St. Louis you can probably find a big one. --Erik

Lake Michigan keeps you warm?.......don't you still have a few feet of snow on the ground? USGS called me up and said they were gonna start monitoring the snow in your yard since it's approaching glacier size... LOL Your area seems pretty cold....what was your low and max day low?

a southern Mag would be a good test in your area......let us know how it performs.
