Barb, where is that pic from, I'm guessing Cali. The Cali desert has many dacty plantings, because of the date trade. :D But there is always a small possibility it could be phoenix sylvestris.

Aaron that pic was from Oatman, CA.
Your P.sylvestris sounds likely in this next pic.

Just received this new pic from them...they "picked up some seeds". :bounce:
This was from Las Vegas, I think.

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5253/554 ... 582d24.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="blueman group 030" />

I say P.sylvestris.

Hard to say on that one? I would almost say CIDP, because of the size of trunk for its age. Any guess would be better than mine. :?

CIDP?

Mine never looks that blue at any time of year.
Thought P.sylvestris gets more blue looking than canariensis or dactilyfera.
Or maybe shade does that.

I don't think its the shade, but some palms can be blue shades like your your y. rostrata blue. I had a very blue cipd that I bought in Scottsdale AZ, I bought it becuase it was so blue compared to the other palms in the store. Also P. dacty. medjool can be very blue.

Ooooh, Aaron, nice pics.

You're right, the medjool is so blue.
I can't distinguish between them at all.

Second pic: wow, those CIDP trunks are massive when they're not pruned to the "fashionable" pineapple shape at top.
Good to see all five in the same pic to compare.

By the way, what happened to your blue CIDP?
Never heard you talk about it before.

When I moved I had no room in my little truck and had to leave it there. It lost all its leaves in the cold once (I left it out until almost dec.) but later came back a put on much growth. I miss that palm. :( That was when I lived in a zone 7 and thought it could live through a winter there.

Love those pics of the desert palms in Cal. and Arz. Phoenix sp.really are a great looking palm. Here are some of the ones I have. Small in comparison to the monsters in the pics. The 15 gal P. dactylifera in my photos I bought for 35.00. The people that sold it said it was a windmill palm?

I miss that palm.
Good reason to get another, Aaron, and keep it for summer patio use; winter as a focal point in front of the south window in living room.

John...I was amazed when seeing the size of P.dacty you got for $35.00. What a bargoon that was.
A windmill palm!!!!!

You sure did good at that price.

When I bought mine it was $7.50 for a 5 gal and I also bought about 5 or more five gal w. robustas for $3.50 each. That was in like 1991 or 1992. The last time I seen a 5 gal cidp for sale I think it was $55? :x

A great start for a gorgeous tropical patio, Aaron.
Bet you spend all your time taking them out, and then back in, these days.
Soon they can spend 24/7 outdoors.

Nice!

I dream of the day. 8) I might grow a few more if I had a patio, but for the most part I have been trying to get rid of most of the inside plants. I planted a bunch of stuff in AZ last summer and is part of the reason I was so upset when the temps fell so low there this past winter.

Part of me cant wait to see what lived the other part dreads the thought of what died. :| I just need head south and see what made it through such a cold spell? I am already looking around for places that are a little warmer.

Yup, what would our days be without dreams, huh?

I understand your wanting to go further south...but you/we will always be zone pushers, no matter where.
So if we lived at the Equator, we'd be trying to grow a Colorado Blue Spruce.
