We had a mild day so I opened the "palm hut" and pulled the potted "desert palms" (Brahea, Trithrinax, Nannorhops) + a Trachycarpus "takil" (= probably naini tal) out to get some fresh air and rain tomorrow.

This cell-phone snap shot shows how they look after getting to a measured +8 F during the record cold of a couple weeks ago (-22 F or -30C in air at nearby gov't wx station). All look damaged but I think all will survive. The Trachy looks least damaged, as expected.

Wes, yes, but it [Trachy "taikil" (=naini tal, presumably)] had spear pull today, just like the Nannorhops and one of the Trithrinax.

Cold is bad.

I guess the warm weather is "helping." More spears out on more Trithrinax.
Brahea all holding firm so far.
I am spraying the copper fungicide in the cavities. Opinions?

You'll just have to wait and watch Erik.
I would keep rain moisture etc,out of the crowns of the
palms in question and esp the ones with s-pull.

Keep an eye on the leaves closest to the spear they usually
shrivel or look pale before they go.

Close enough to spring now that they have a fighting chance.

A potted Brahea spear pulled a bit ago; four to go.
We have a warm rain coming in a couple of hours so so I'll bring the stressed potted palms inside (the house, this time) before then.
As for in-ground palms, the only spear pull so far is on a needle palm. The unheated Trachy. fortunei (x3) look bad but spears are firm as of now. Heated palms in ground (x9) look like they will make it.

Erik, that is too bad.
In the picture the Trachy looked pretty good. Nice and green.
The key now is to keep the spears dry.
Cooper fungicide is fine but I usually drill a small hole in the truck so the excess stuff can drain out.
You want that spear to be dry.
Make sure you water the roots of the trachy though.
Hope they come back for you.
And don't give up on them too early.
I had some spears on chamaedorea radicalis come back in September.

The Chamaedorea are in the ground in the temporary palm hut. All leaflets brown but petioles are green so I am mildly hopeful.

Erik is that Trachy (front left in pic) leaning with roots exposed?
Time will tell, but babying them now will pay dividends in spring (no cold blasts, keep canopy on them...stick them under a patio table on mild days outdoors).

Paul, anybody who's got two Trachies in a bathtub (albeit a spare tub), and Waggies in a dining room, and seedlings coming up in flats in the garage certainly has come to the right place with the other palm nuts here
All look very well grown.
I saw those pots on sale too, nice size and appearance for patio use.

Erik you got some crazy temp swings this winter, i was thinking of letting mine outside this week, but last year I put them out on a cloudy day and it got sunny and they all got sunburn.

Barb - Yeah i'm def a palm nut. Actually it seems to be like an addiction.
