Was the Groundhog Right????
Its been a decent winter this year. Awsome fall, great december, and 2 weeks mabey 3 of below -25C.
Check out my 14 day forcast. It looks like I may be out of the "cold weather rut" for the long run ( wishful thinking I know, but it is promising).
The local weather, says 4 - 6C friday saturday and sunday !!!!!

Not warm, but not as cold as it has been. They are calling for -18C tonight, without cloud... Not good.

Paul,
so, you noticed the nice warm up now that the winds have shifted from the SW?
The official state weather station here in rural Bixby (mesonet.org) got down to -27 oC earlier.
The coldest I saw in the heated palm hut was -13 oC, but I suspect that might be a tad chilly for Chameadorea.
Anyway, I feel like a Canadian this morning: 60 cm of snow, temps in zone 5....
--Erik (at 35 oN, though it is hard to believe)

Theres going to be quite the temp swing here tonight. ITs warming up all night long.
When you look at the weather map, there arent any arctic highs to blow the cold air down. Thats our typical winter pattern, Lots of high pressure in the arctic, making the prevailing winds blow in cold arctic air. What the maps are showing is no pressure systems in the arctic. If anything they are slows. Most of the high pressure is in the pacific ( blowing warm air accross the country), or in the southern states. The warm up is comming for all of us i think
The Chameadorea can take what -10C? It isnt a well tested palm either. Im sure a short time at that temp is alright.
Its ok Eric, if anything of yours can survive this winter, im sure you wont have many problems from now on

My children are all big and can fire a gun as well as that marmot Jim showed us.
The daddy goat protects his kids very well--better than the dogs do.
While we are talking animals, I am delighted to say that no animals died last night. One case of frost bite to the comb of a rooster who I could not get put away in the heated henhouse but he will make it.
Speaking of the heated henhouse: despite a heater and 70 birds in a small space, their water froze solid. That has never happened.

All over but the cry'in...you guys should be in the 60s at least in a "few" days.
Maybe 50s here over the weekend-for sure next week,it will be nice to disappear this snow!

The water still froze with 70 birds in there?
That rooster couldn't have been much help.
All joking aside, glad everyone's safe and sound, and the animals too.
At least you had a good whack of snow...imagine without snow cover for insulation.
You'll be swimming in the pool in no time.

I am counting on the snow to at least give Musa basjoo and Canna and Colocassia a shot at coming back. Maybe trunkless palms if I am really the lucky1.
Soil temps at that same Bixby weather station that showed me -22 oF this morning were at +33 oF as shallow as 2" (5 cm).
As for the animals, yes, they have been my main worry. I was positive I'd find dead animals but no.
