Mike, thanks...from your most recent trip to FLA?
...and I thought people were complaining it was cold there.
Seeing his pics and now these, I'm surprised Billy came back.
Beautiful pictures...would have a heck of a time selecting only one as my fav.

Cocos with painted lower trunks
Barb,
that comment was just too tempting to pass up.
(note to mods: feel free to delete)
As for me, no, I only take photos of palms. Here are Cocos on the beach in Belize. Note the custom of painting the lower portion of trunks with white paint. The lime is said to discourage pests. Interesting, huh?

And don't let me forget the retaining wall made of chit palm (Thrinax radiata) stems. They and Cocos are used for hurricane protection on the beach.
Chit palm is very important culturally.

When I got home that winter 3 years ago - I placed my first order for palms. That's when the addiction began.

Jubaeas are fabulous, always amazed at the sheer size of those trunks.
bananieru, that Copernicia is a beauty in the first pic.
I tried to get the slide show to work in your photo album, pictures wouldn't advance, so I've bookmarked it to try again.
Very nice. BILLMA was at Fairchild recently too. Hope he sees your pics.
Thanks!

Jubaea,
Nice pictures, isn't Fairchild out of this world, it's amazing what can be grown in S. Fla. I'm heading back in a week or two, I'll check them out for you. I noticed a little more palm damage this year over last. Last year all the exotic BLE's where dropping leaves like crazy.
Check out picture 4 on this post page 1, look familiar?
Here a kapok tree in Palm Beach, very cool tree.

Ceiba
Bill,
I had no idea kapok (Ceiba) grew there, but I guess not surprising. Definitely a neat tree.
There is one indoors in Tulsa (at the zoo) but it is threatening to bust the roof. Can you say, "emergent"?

Great pics...oooh, could feel the warmth!
Those "dinner plates" on the pond, wow.
And what a lovely Adenium you brought home!
I've got the desert rose too, and freaked when all the leaves fell off in Fall, but they're deciduous even indoors. (phew!)
Has yours got a big swollen contorted trunk?
What are those white flowers in your first pic at home?
The second pic looks like Malva? really invasive here, I've been chopping at the ground with a mattock for five years to get rid of it.
It's still winning coming up in gravel paths, etc.
Looks like the cat didn't starve while you were away

In the first pictures it's an echinopsis eyriesii. It had three flowers only all year long, all in the same time. I caught them open only in the first night we got home. (it has a lot of pups now, all less than 1", I can offer some in Canada if anybody is interested)
In the second one is a rose of sharon. It flowers all summer long and it's a very low maintainance bush. We prune it quite heavy in the spring, and it's always full of buds till the first frost.
It's true, even though the desert rose it's in a south facing window it lost all the leaves. I thought I lost it. Now it has a lot of them coming back, but it's like a meallybugs magnet.

oh yes please, put me on your list for echinopsis in spring .
When the time comes, will see if there's something I can send you...
oops...rose of sharon, the flowers/stems/leaves look exactly like our malva.
The second time my adenium lost its leaves I knew not to worry.
I placed it in a cooler spot in a north window and withheld water for about 4 or 5 weeks.
Then back into a south window (and hopefully outside soon), more watering and a bit of fert.
I'll keep an eye out for mealybugs...seems my plants have everything else that crawls, flies, hops...
thanks Tavi.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
