Not surprisingly, I couldn't find the topic where we last discussed this...

http://geology.com/news/2010/google-ear ... ogy.com%29

They're promising trees...let's see if they show locations of cold hardy palms...or maybe a palm hut :D

Ha Ha....yes that is so true. I also spend lots of time in Northern Mexico, places with the same climate. Looking for landscape plants an Ideas. :D
El Paso is a zone 8b/9 but on the other side of the river in Ciudad Juarez they plant so much more exotics.

Those two palms growing through the roof overhang! :D
Nice they weren't cut down.

In addition to the palms and gorgeous homes, I like the use of tile and garden walls.
Tile driveways are likely cheaper than concrete? Sure look better anyway.

The last pic...wow, the work keeping those junipers "pom pom'd"

Hey Aaron, I've got a question about Streetview 6.
Tried to load it today (and I know SQUAT about how to do that)
When I clicked Download the free Google 6 version, a window popped up that said :
"This is a binary file...save or cancel?"
So I clicked Save and a gobbledygook bunch of messages came up in another window.
Just "x'd" out of all that.

What should I have done differently to download?
What's the thingy about binary about?

Thanks! More hot weather palm pics please (after you teach me how to load 6.0) 8)

Barb
PS--also lots of palms in southern England...they'll all have snow on them today (according to the news).

I can tell there is already some things that I don't like with google earth 6.0 You can't zoom in or out on street views. Makes it hard to get that good pic.

Two, a Binary file is just the install file. You may have closed the window that asked if you wanted to run the install, if you saved the file it should be in your "Downloads" folder named "GoogleEarthSetup". Assuming you use Windows.

Yup, Windows...with zippo skillset.
Thanks Carl!

I finally played around with the online version (without loading it onto my computer).
H and I found the house in Vancouver where he spent his childhood.
And you're NOT going to believe this.
There's a 2-foot tall Trachy outside the front door.
Honest! Even he laughed, saying "you see, I had a palm tree BEFORE you".

Zoom worked for me (to see the little palm tree).
Just clicked the regular zoom " + " at the top left.

Great new pics Aaron.
Wow...must be the part of town where bank managers live. :D

I think we are talking about different things.
I don't have a problem getting to street view. It is when I'm in street view I can no longer zoom in or out inside of the 360 pic of the street. It was nice because you could zoom in to see a better detail like say a bush from the street view or zoom out to see the whole front of a big house from the street view with out traveling up or down the street. But that is ok because I read up and they no longer have that feature. :D

One more example (sorry)

If you look at the pics I took of google earth most are taken from down the street to fit the house in the pic, as before in google earth 5 you could be infront of the house and zome out and fit the whole house in the shot. :)

Like I did with this shot in google earth 5

What is sad is that about 90% of all homes in Mexico have bars in the windows and high fences in the yard. It kind of looks like a prison no matter where you are. :?

Aaron, but with "6", last night that's how we found H's house where he grew up.
We "travelled" down the street using the streetview arrows (even though the house addresses aren't too accurate).
Found the house, as though we were standing in the middle of the street looking at it.
From that point you can "spin" your cursor "on the street" as though you are turning 360 degrees to look around, and then end up looking back at the first house.

I said to H, that looks like a little palm at the front door, so while looking at the house, I clicked the " + " at the top left of the page (or was it on the right?).
Another + click and we were close enough to see it was a trachy palm, although pic was fuzzier the closer we got.

I didn't download it, simply clicked on the demo, selected Vancouver, etc. etc.

If I knew how to do a screen capture, I could repeat it and post it here, but haven't a clue.

Yes, I noticed the bars on the windows too...scary concept if there's ever a house fire and homeowners are trapped.
High solid fences--like walls of stucco/concrete--appeal to me because of the microclimate they'd provide plants. I thought it was more for privacy, than keeping trespassers out.

Barb,
to do a screen capture, just tap the "PrtSc" button near the upper right of your keyboard. That dumps the entire screen to the clipboard. Then, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Paint. From the Edit menu in Paint, select "paste." You can then crop. "Paint" is a crude program, but with effort it gets the job done, marginally, and comes free with Windows.
From "File", save it with a file name you can remember and find.
You can then upload this to your Flickr account.

To make sure I did it right, I ran the procedure on "street view" for my place. The image is a little old, but you can see hay bales in the front yard. Seems to be recurring here....

Practicing screen capture:
Middle house (green one) was where H spent his early years:

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... "></iframe>
<small><a href="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... urce=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

Practicing full view of where H was raised:
<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... "></iframe>
<small><a href="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... urce=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

Now trying to Zoom into the little palm tree beside front steps.
<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... "></iframe>
<small><a href="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... urce=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

That zoom was way too fuzzy, backing up a bit to try and show the little palm:

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... "></iframe>
<small><a href="http://maps.google.ca/maps?client=firef ... urce=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

Still not crisp and clear, but when I'm viewing in Google Maps (yup, maps, with the built-in streetview) it's crisp and clear until I try to download the HTML here: oh well. It's the first plant to the right of the front stairs...young Trachy.!

Too bad none reproduced clearly here on PN.

...will get the hang of this eventually!

How did I get it to work like that?
Sheesh, after farting around with it for hours and hours (yup!), I can't remember which of the 9,000 tries worked! disgust
:laughing6:

I did learn two things:

1. My street isn't important enough for them to come and photograph,
2. Google 6 Streetview program is a pain. Aaron, you're right...I think it only works on Mapview (which gives pegman and streetview)...go figure.

And (drumroll), allows ZOOM.

OK...(to myself)...where to I want to travel next? This is so much fun.
Goodbye vacuuming and dusting.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Yup, you can visit the same place as I did, ha ha.
It's because although I downloaded Google Streetview 6, I didn't use it.

I went back to Google Maps, picked a city, hiked pegman around empty lots with nada on it, stopped at the first palm tree
At that point, when you want to do a screen shot, just look in the top right.
It says something like Send Save Link
If you press the first one, it's email/jpg, that didn't work for me.
The second one gives you HTML (if I recall).
Loaded that here.

The reason you can go down the street is that it's "live" on google, not a screen shot from what I downloaded.

I felt another gray hair pop out on my head just now... :angryfire:
Barb
PS--at least I think that's how it worked.
That was how I got H's boyhood home pics on here, but they were so fuzzy.
I'll next go to Italy (which you mentioned the other day) and see if I can send you something other than a pizza.

If you go fullscreen, palms are on left.
City of BARI, Italy.
It's even cool to go down a road against the traffic.
