Where I live

Barb, Jay, Steve and others have given us nice images of their landscape to help us better appreciate where they are "coming from" when they post. I thought I'd do the same thing, although I lack their photographic skill and equipment. These photos from this weekend were all taken as snap shots with a cell phone camera, but hopefully they give you a sense of rural Oklahoma.

Photo 1 was taken by W the other morning from her office, 2,000' above the neighborhood. Our farm is towards the right, about 2/3 of the way up.

Photo 2 was taken later that morning as W asked the pilot to circle the farm to make sure I was up early doing chores.

Photo 3 shows the old hay W kindly deposited in the pasture near my palms, so I can use it as mulch. The old Trachy from last year is in the foreground; winter protection has not started yet as it has been so delightfully warm (lowest has been 24 oF -- I mean positive 24 oF, Duncan). The stallion and gelding decided to make sure there was nothing left worth eating before I took it.

I dont have any of my actual area...... im in town, 2m from the lake.... im in the south of town, which is the old lake bottom a few hundred years ago, so its flat flood plain, but we arent prone to flooding. Up noth is very hilly ( except at the shore area), thats because im situated directly on the canadian sheild. and the surrounding country side is several hundred feet above most of the city level.

Lake supirior is an old rift, called the kewatennan rift ( spelling). Mt mkay ( the first link), and the rest of the escarpent surrounding the city is the result of millions of years of volcanic activity. There is an abundace of quartz gold and amythist here, and presumibly oil. We have one of 3 open pit agate mines in the entire world. Most of the escarpment is shale, but there is lots of exposed of bedrock and clay soil, as well as sandy, and muskag ( quagmires)

The city itself is literaly in the middle of nowhere, the surrounding cities are less then 10 000 people, you have to drive 8 hours west and almost 10 hours east just to get to a city at par with mine. Were surrounded by prime decidious forest, with pines, birtch, maple, service berry, ash and other trees. We are prime fishing and hunting grounds for thousands of miles around.

So is the farm eric.... it reminds me of saskatchewan... flat...... lots of grass and sky. I loved it out west..
