This was the one I planted as a tiny 3 gallon in July 2008. It put out about 10 fronds this summer.



Here is another trachy that I planted as a 15 gallon this June. It pushed out only half a frond this summer. Can't wait for it to establish so I can cut off the leggy fronds. Larger palms seem to take forever to establish also. I planted 4 more 3 gallon trachys this summer and they put out 5-6 fronds each.



The coldest I've seen so far this fall is 19F and the coldest high was 34F.

Very well, Wxman! My fortunei put out seven leaves only during this season.

nice Trachies!! I think my T. takil 'aka nanital' only grew 3 or 4 new leaves this year.....but it seems happy. On the other hand, Bill MA's palms grew 4,000 leaves LOL! Every time I see his garden his palms are a foot taller!

Your trachies are looking wonderful, they really love it at your place. I'm surprised your new trachy only put out the one frond, next year it will reward you I'm sure. Did you try again this year with your basement grow room? I saw your snow pictures the other day on the other board, pretty funny. Your daughter looked happy to play in it

Remember last year we where talking about the washy roots. I was digging holes for my greenhouse last night and I found a washy root 22" down and 16 feet from the trunk, Isn't that crazy

Tim, you don't like leggy fronds? had just been grown in lower light, I think it's a spectacular Trachy, as are the rest.
You'll soon wish the one at the corner of your path to the front door was leggy...(machete-swinging to bring the groceries in the front door).

Yeah Bill, just one frond. And it only grew halfway to the other ones, lol! You can tell this palm was grown either in low light or tightly packed together. I think it was a big adjustment to its new location thats why the slow growth. Next year I'm hoping for 5 to 7 fronds on it! Can't believe you found a washy root that far away. Confirms my belief that they grow really far away from the trunk and they probably all got zapped in last winters cold. My box was only 36x36. I think trachy roots can handle cold and frozen ground better as shown by my oldest trachy planted in 2008.

lucky1, no I don't care for leggy fronds too much. I think they twist and bend funny. I prefer the shorter, stocky fronds that are stiffer an lead to a fuller crown. Oh well, I will just patiently wait for the shorter fronds to grow in!

P.S. Bill, I need a hobby to get me through the winter and my daughter really loves snow, so I had to! My bananas are potted up in 18 gallon Walmart tubs ($4.88 a piece). I stuffed 2 to 3 bananas per tub and put them in the basement for the winter. Here is a pic I took.



The basjoo have put about 2 leaves out since the pic and the orinoco are still establishing. When I dug them up I rinsed all the native soil off their roots and I think that shocked them. Ensete maurelii, musa basjoo and musa orinoco are down there. My only siam ruby left (the others rotted in summer!!) is in the house near a west window and it's put 3 leaves out inside so far.

Looking good Tim, You'll get some nice growth off of them next year for sure since the plant has matured.
