Potting up Yucca rostrata for winter

Post by lucky1 » Thu Oct 14, 2010 7:54 am

Call me chicken.
Also 'coz H said "NO" to leaving them in the ground (as though he has to look after them!) :?
Agree they're too beautiful to sacrifice to a North Okanagan winter (-23C).

Had them for 2? or 3? years.
Yucca rostrata "Sapphire Skies" from Plant Delights Nursery in N.Carolina

The roots were 3 feet long (tips laying on the shovel).
Quite the chore digging out these babies.

Someone on PN said "yuccas don't do well in pots".
Where I had them planted was too far from power source.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

I wonder if they would benefit from being planted in half perlite half soil in a deep pot? There beauties I can see why you don't want to lose them!

Yup, roots went down to China, no wonder these things do well in desert landscapes.
And I probably left a few in the ground :|
half perlite half soil in a deep pot
Gravel is cheaper than perlite (I've got a huge pile out back) so I'll mix that with good quality potting soil.
Might keep the garbage can from falling over too in strong winds as the Yucca grows (if it grows).
