Recived my 6 foot windmill including leaves from Mike in Montreal, I can't say enough great things about Mike his nolage about these Palms is incredible. So I put it in the biggest pot I could find until the spring at the time I will pant it.

I'm hoping I'll see some flowers out of this guy it's really thick and healthy looking, I gave it some Epsom salts and palm food along with some triple mix soil.

I know I know the pot is small but it's only for the winter.

I'm very happy with it!

Even a plastic garbage can would be better, allowing for root development.

You know what Barb Im going to go this weekend and look for a wider pot, it will only be in that pot for the winter but I still think its a good idea to put it into a larger pot.

Wider and deeper by about 4 inches.
That should do it nicely.

Thanks Scott if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have found out about Mike. I'm going to go to Terra greenhouses on Saturday and hopefully I'll find a bigger pot with lots of drainage, it will be planted next spring so exited to get it into the ground!

WOW... nice palm.

Depends of the winter forecast. If we have another similar start to winter than probably not till last week of November/first week of December. I had 2 palms that didn't receive protection last winter until Dec 4th! I will probably play it safe this year and start getting the protection ready to go by mid November. I'll start by covering them with the palm hut but probably won't heat the hut until temps are going below -5c.. The palm hut heats up quite a bit during the day without any heaters and holds it for most of the night.. The nice thing about the windmill palms is that you can enjoy a much longer season with them before needing to protect them. Bill from Mass and I were talking about that a long time ago. Basically you can almost get away with only protecting them for Dec,Jan, Feb and some of March depending on the winter.. So like 3.5 to 4 months.. I think Bill only had his covered for three months last winter...

Ok thanks. I left my little windmill 10 gal out side until Jan 8 of last year temps were around -10 or colder some nights, it didn't even flinch the leaves where still green the entire pot was a solid brick of ice! Once I plant my big one next spring I'll try and push it to mid Jan without protection.

That's a beautiful looking palm you got there! That will sure make a dramatic impact in your yard next year too.

How much bigger is the pot you have it in now from the one it came out of? If it's bigger on all side and height by a couple of inches you'll be fine until spring a bigger pot will just hold more winter water which you don't want. Your call

Erik-I usually leave my 10gal windmill out untill the temps are close to -12c with no issue.

Bill - the new pot I put it in is about 4 inches deeper and about an inch wider what do you think bill?

Erik- why you should be completely fine is your windmill in the ground? If so you don't even need to protect it. My 10 gal is in a pot it has close to 2 foot of trunk and is perfectly fine at -10c for a few weeks.

This past winter was its first. I wrapped the trunk. It was mostly defoliated; low was -16oC with strong wind.
It has recovered pretty well (there is a photo on my Early August photo gallery thread).
I planed four more Trachy in April (2 T. fortunei; T. "Waggy"). This will be there first winter in the ground. --Erik

I would just leave it in the pot it's in now, it will be fine for 8 months. I'd be careful leaving it outside in the pot during that cold of weather, it can really do a lot of damage to the root system.

I would agree with Bill`s comments leave it in the pot.I would plant it next March or April. Congrats on such a nice palm.

Hey Scott. I am glad you are enjoying your palm. Let me know how it does. Transplant to bigger pot and put gravel on bottom and allow palm to dry out between watering. I do believe it is harder to grow these things inside and think you have enough time to plant in the ground now. I have planted palms in the ground in october that have made the winter.

Another good idea there-why not plant it now?

Plenty of warm soil temps,I know here it's usually Nov before soil temps go below 50f.

I have planted palms in summer and they never miss a beat with the warm soil-they love it!

My first 2 palms were planted Nov 1,I also planted a Waggie in Dec once and it made through
fine but I wouldn't recommend that!

I'm pretty sure he's moving in the sping and that's why he's not planting in the ground righ now..

If that is the case and you really feel you need to repot-
I would use a pot that is -not so much wider-
but deeper to encourage the roots to move toward "warmer" soil temps
when it is planted out.

Four inches is more then enough to grow into over the winter with an inch on each side.

I bought a 7 gallon and a 15 gallon from Mike....hes the best.
