My windmill has one foot 5 inches of trunk with leaves it's close to 5 foot, I was wondering at what height should I expect to see some flowering?

You should plant that sucker in the ground!!! It's really nice. It might be a few years before it flowers.. Usually in May to June they flower I think, also depending on your climate. My needle flowered at the beginning of June. None of my trachy's flowered..

Hey thanks! A lot of people on here keep telling me how nice my palm looks but I don't think it looks any different then the rest of the Palms on here maybe I'm wrong... I really want to plant it next spring I know if I do it will take off like crazy but worried about the winter and protection. I live in waterdown about an hour southwest of Toronto.

I live in Kingston, so a little colder than you and I am overwintering them here check out Frank's place in Ontario, here is the link. If you have any protection questions just ask on this site. Also if you go back and look on this site you'll see tons of pics people posted last winter of their protection methods.. There are so many people here overwintering palms with protection in zone 4-8..

Damn Scott I love big trachy you have by the deck. I would love to plant mine in the ground, I believe I'm a zone 5b could be wrong though, I'll take a look at your protection method this year and take some notes.

I know mine flowered for the first time when the trunk was about 2 1/2 feet after being planted in the ground for two years. Males will flower first in spring and will also flower when there smaller. By the way mine had a 1 foot trunk when planted and was in a 15 gallon pot.

Females on the other hand usually need to have at least 5 1/2 feet to flower. Hope this was helpful.

I agree with Scott you should find yourself a nice spot and pop yours in the ground

That is great info thank you so much, I really hope mine is a male after reading that. Is there anyway to tell without having it flower wether it's male or female?

There is no way I know of, maybe if you had a nursery for 20 years and watched them grow you could tell who knows Yeah I'd like to know before I buy them, it would help on planting placement. I think I have a female in the middle of my three, it is growing slower maybe it's my imagination though, it's not that slow. I'll find out next year if the end one flowers and that one doesn't.

By the way your better off with a female, even though it takes longer you don't get seeds from a male, just pollen and that's easy to get in the mail. I can't wait to have my own seeds someday.

Your question makes me wonder if anyone has ever posted the age here of their flowering Trachy (Wes from North Van a couple of years ago???)
His was a stunner, loaded with flowers but I can't remember the age.

I think it's more an age thing, than size, but I could be wrong.

PS--my old Trachy is 33 or 34 now, never a hint of trying to flower.
But maybe now that it's in the ground it will think about it.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if your palm flowers in the next couple of years flowers
