The new leaves just make the old ones look smaller!

That is a really neat plant to watch Jim. Are the leaves still similar in appearance to the second picture? They looked like they where made out of plastic, interesting to say the least.

Can't wait for the space shots!

Your picture series gives me the sensation of shrinking in size while standing in the garden. Like in Land of the Giants (dating myself...).

Anyway, very nice. I like the variety you have.

Thanks Bill & Jack-
The leaves are still rubbery.

It's funny, when you look at the picture that bottle looks like the kind you get from a soda machine,
if you think of it that way and then realize that it is a 2 liter bottle, you really get an idea of the scale/
massive size of this plant, more fun to watch grow then anything in the yard -for sure!

I need to get a picture of that new leaf unfurling,it's almost as big as the last one already!

Bill,
I'm in. I think I have soil that is hard to top (think horses, chickens...); it is just whether I can water enough for this heat. --Erik

Cool Erik!

I'm sure your soils really good, it better be right! It's pretty good here too though, I think this was farm land over 100 years ago. I have two feet of solid loam and pure beach sand for 8 more feet after that, then it's rock. When I dig there are no rocks to speak of either.

Oh yeah Jim,

I just noticed some monster blooms coming out of my calidora yesterday too. I'm not going to cut them off I don't think.

Thai Giant race 2011

My folks live in Portland so they could grow Gunnera but would never get a Colocasia like Jim's. My mom has tried regular EE and they never get far without the heat. Which we have down here.
My wife and I decided on the garden space for the Thai Giant race, so she's in on it.
She had marked out a spot in my original design for artichokes and despite a lot of work amending the soil they always shrivel in the heat. So, now we have a 10' by 10' spot available.
Jim has been posting on the EPS so maybe we could get some Italians or Ukrainians in on it, too. --Erik

Anywhere without warmth/heat would be tough.

Mine go crazy when the lows at night are near/+ 80

Erik

with your heat they would probably need afternoon shade, like the east side of a structure 8)

by TerdalFarm
Darn. That will be tough, but I'll take a look. I dedicate the little bit of shade I get from the gazebo to Trachies.
The spot we had in mind is about the most sun-blasted we have. --Erik

Holy MAN Jim that's a humongous plant! I've always wanted to try EE's too, maybe that will be my next mission next year!

That must be so much fun to grow!

Dude, thats Thai is huge! Im waiting for someone i know to send me an offset.

My colocasia is jsut on its second leaf, took forever to get the bulbs to pop. Im not letting them go dormant, im bringing them inside ( the Alocasia odora). Weve had plenty of heat. The other plants grew in and shaded them... so... lesson learned.

Just started to get in to EE. Gotta say im hooked

Grats again dude on the awsomeness:D

Oh Canada-thanks not sure about the offset thing-

Might have to-

to get one up to Canada, maybe you guys can put a big order together and Bill can send a bunch up there next year-

I believe he may have a connection to make that happen- but don't quote me on that.

That would be interesting to say the least.. Ill have to think about that.

Sounds like the winning plan,I will use mine from this year to insure victory

Actually I will plant it(the new one) in a different spot and see how it goes-

I predict Eriks most likely to burst into flames!

Penny in NC most likely has the best location for one to do the best. It's anyone's game though! We already know how well they grow in Jim's yard, I wonder how they'll do in Mike's yard in S. Jersey Hot there! Also Jacks yard in Maryland Hot there too. Erik will win if he waters 12 hours a day

I'll leave a sprinkler on it!
Seriously, though, I may take Jim's advice to try to find some shade, maybe near that cabbage palm if it comes through winter. --Erik
