Warm January

Post by TerdalFarm » Wed Feb 17, 2010 8:28 am

January, 2010, was the fourth warmest on record:
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/?report=g ... Get+Report
The exceptions were the SE portion of the U.S. (plus Europe and Russia), which were colder than average.
Hence Barb having soil warmer than mine.

Thanks for that link, Erik.

Sheesh, did you see the two-chart comparison between 1961-1990 and 1971-2000? "creeping red".

So I'll be sitting on the curb this summer, with a bucket, asking for donations of water.
Save the planet, drink beer.

I remember your soil temp of 40F last month, Erik.
That's Warm--considering the duration of cold you guys experienced.

Thanks for asking.
It was pretty bad for Oklahoma, but just fine here. One big storm passed to our south and another veered north into Kansas. The nearest twister was about 30 miles away.
Here, we just had strong winds and ~1/3" rain, which fell heavily but not for long. No hail.
Even my Musa basjoo leaves (albeit small) like fine.
I'm sure we'll have more Spring storms to come.

Barb,
thanks.
Yesterday was worse for the Tulsa area. An F2 hit the house of a friend of ours ~7 miles away. She is OK, but lost her mature trees and roof.
An F0 was only three miles from here.
On our farm, it hit at 4:30 am. My plants are all fine--even Trachy and Musa!--but the roof gutter came down.
As I type this, the radio has a report from Bixby where winds were 60 mph. I'm on a hilltop west of Bixby, so I had at least that.

Oh man...sad your friend's place got hit.
Sounds like it could have been a lot worse.
I think I'll pass on that 5 acres now  and stick it out here even with the "severe water restrictions".
We'll soon have to put plants under the clothesline to water them!

The winds must have been a rude awakening at 4:30 a.m.
Your patio furniture must be in the next county by now ...

Your Trachy's had winds before

5 acres-:D

This thread reminded me of the first black weatherman skit SNL did in 95
I don't know why-tornado's I guess

Can't seem to find any video here's the transcript

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/95/95imackey.phtml

You really need to have seen the skit to appreciate how funny it was!
When he tells the tornado-"yo bitch, go make me a sandwich"
I came unglued-I laughed so hard!

Don't try this at home................ERIK!

Understatement! I knew we had rain coming, but not this. I went to sleep with my west window open. My feet were hanging off the end of the bed, about a foot from that window. I was all stressed out from grading final exams and so went to bed with a sleeping pill and wine. Wham! It hit my feet like a baseball bat. I went from deep sleep to on my feet in <1 sec. I ran around the house closing windows and making sure the dogs were inside. (BTW--wife, son slept through all this.) Peeked out at the barn with our expensive horses; it was holding up. Decided to let W sleep. Went online to see what was coming. Reassuring, but still could not sleep.

Patio furniture is still on the grounds. Yeah!

The friend who got hit had small pieces of patio furniture from neighbors far and wide everywhere.

So, Barb, now you see why bare land out in the country is cheap around here. Real estate is all about location, location, location.

The Trachy has indeed had to deal with wind (Dec. 24). I have two new T. fortunei + the Waggy and "takil" and they look surprisingly good. Also the Musa--very surprising. Good thing they are still small I guess.

Jim,
I'd like that guy as the local meteorologist! Nobody would miss warnings....

I'd wake up next week...to no house :|
Glad the horses/barn/dogs/plants are OK.

That poor Trachy ... yes I remember (hence the understatement).
Good choices on your new palms.

Your musa doesn't mind wind?
I've had mine out for a couple of days, 10 feet from the corner of the building.
One big leaf already shredded from wind.

Learned that all "location, location, location" lands have a downside too.
If it's sheltered area, there are generally houses on top of you or a vertical mountain face against the house.
If it's great privacy, means exposure to wind/heat/cold northwest winter winds.

Yep...our local weather guy could use some humor too.

Post by TerdalFarm » Tue May 18, 2010 4:35 am

Not only was January warm, but the January - April period was the warmest on record. Just not where I live. :(
