Pushing the limits of cold hardiness..

Ive planted the azalea ( lollipop), pixie asiatic lily, crimson pirate day lily, "gold medal" grandiflora rose, Olympiad hybrid tea rose, and Wisteria floribunda
'Longissima Alba'. WE had a fairly late cold spell (-4C), aveything looks fine, except fer the wisteria leaves, thing rubbery and see through :S. Im just as not happy as it probably is. I know itll be fine, just sucks seeing it go down:S.

Ill be recieving my Bamboo/musa/canna shipment this week as well.

WEll, i think ill post some pics of it so far. Its a work in progress.

This is what is called an "assorted clematis"

Its supposed to be one of these

THis is the wisteria ( before it got owned, im to embarrased to post an after frost pic lol)

THis is the whole bed so far ( swamp lily, iris, wisteria, and daylily)

This is the sheltered bed

THis is the azalea

THis is the Olympiad rose ( the other one looks as bad ATM

ANd thats really it so far. I have tons of morning glory ready to be planted ( too cold ATM), and not to mention lupin, some taro, and some alocasia that havne yett o come up

I fergot to mention to, i have some red pepper plants, as well as some "sugar sweet" cherry tomatoes. I also have some CAnna ( tropicanna black, Roseman cole, wyoming, and the president. I also have some foxglove as well. Pretty much EVERYTHING is new in there, cept the weigla, swamp lily and iris ( thers also some paeony), and the Vitus Himrod grape, which is slowly commin alive

Paul there ya go, you asked to see em. Most of the stuff is going out this weekend ( bamboo, clematis, lupin, foxglove), Im gonna wait a few weeks to plant the musa and morning glory, and other more tropical plants ( i have some spider plants and monstera to plant, not to mention 10 pots of canna).

Ill post more as the season comes along...

Well, not on the calender:P We had a good -4C a week ago, wisteria looks like crap lol. But since then no frost, and were forecasted to be 5C minimum fer the next week at least. So a bunch of things are getting planted

You have any updated pics of your place? ID like to see how its goin downt here.

No recent pics... Wisteria is nearly finished here, Lilacs too... The very late leafing species (oak, locust, etc.) now have fully extended their leaves...

Bamboo has begun shooting. Cacti are about to enter their 2 month show and the late Rhodies are just beginning as well! I'll post some pics when I have a chance.

Most recent pics. Im about half way done. STill gotta plant the musa, and the peppers n tomato. I now have 4 kinds of clematis ( crystal fountain, the president, radar love and gillian blades). I have a few canna now ( purpurea, roseman cole, wyoming, tropicanna black, the president and richard wallace).

If I can make a small suggestion...
after watering, plants would benefit from a deeper mulch (once the ground heats up) around them than currently, at least a couple of inches.
Keeps down weeds and considerably reduces need to water when it gets hot.

Nice plants...and a great little Selloum philodendron too.

I didnt think id have enough, but i still have some. I still have to get some dirt too, thanks fer thee suggestion.

THat selloum was in such a small pot fer so long :S, i grew it from seed a few years ago, i think 06. I potted it up to that big thing a month or so ago, and its taken off liek mad.

I'm impressed you grew that Selloum from seed.
They're relatively cheap out west, hence I never thought to do that.

Here's my Selloum...developed nice large caudex (after probably 20 years)

Mine burns from direct sun but yours looks very happy.

WOw, cant wait till min gets that big LOL. Mine was in direct sun all year last summer (it was a cold summer), but it did really well outside.

Heres a seloum from out conservatory, tha tleaf was about 4 feet long!

My poor basjoos dont seem to like direct sun yet. Then again there barley 4 inches tall ATM lol. ITs been above 5C outside, so their outside all night, so imm assumin the wilt has to do with the plat acclimitizing...

Your young basjoos don't like full sun?
I was told to pot mine up as soon as it arrived and place it in the hottest sunniest spot, which I did.
Winds shredded most of the leaves as soon as they came up, but it was never sunburned (unlike my juvenile palms).

I think your basjoo wilt has to do with cold nights.

Plant your basjoo in the hottest, most sunny place you have Canadian! Let it burn! As soon as your night time temps get into the mid 50F-60f your nana will go nuts. Heat is your best friend for giant plants.

I thought it was just acclimitizing. They plants took some bad temp fluctuations in shipping too ( my phyllostchys had some bas some bad leaf damage). They would be right in to ground, cept our past frost date isnt fer anothe r2 weeks. OUr temps have been 20-30C, an dnights hav ebeen 6C - 12 C. Im confidenct the temps are good to plant everything now, BUT i know how our canadian springs are... so im a bit leary still.

Right now their underneeth the army net. They get lots of sun, just not full direct ATM.I was actualy gonna move em back today LOL. Im more then likley gonna plant this week end, if not durin the week sometime, I just wanna keep an eye at the temps. THis early spring has me a bit confused now LOL.

Ive thought about it, but id invest in that when/if i get a palm or 2 lol. The ground is warm now, and not to mention i have black multch. Its just our weather at the moment is a bit warmer then usual, well espeial compared to last year, i probably coulda planted everything last week sometime, seeing as there is NO frost focasted, and lows havnt been below6C fer a week or so.

But now ive givin up on being patient, so everything is going in the ground today or tomorrow, the worse itll do is get a bit cool, and ill cover up some things with plastic.

The basjoos seem to have picked up. im quite happy now LOL, I just cant wait to get em in ground and growing like a weed.

Now i have some "evergreen/shrub" slow release fertilizer i bought fer my bamboo. I think its like 25 12 14. Since banana are essentialy grass/herb im assuming this will be effective, as well as weekly feedings of 20 20 20?

You'd be better off pulling the mulch back away from your tropicals
so the sun can warm the soil.

ALright, so i bought a clematis HEnryII, i now have 5 different types lol. SO I now have henryii, the president, gillian blades, crystal fountain and the radar love. Everything is planted. I jsut have no elephant ears at the moment. THeir being slow. I was told they need constant 20C temps to do ANYTHING.

But heres some updated pics.

All of my canna (Wyoming, tripicanna black, roseman cole, richard wallace, the president, and theres a purpurea rhizome not sprouted yet.

The nights are really quickly heating up, the cannas like it. And actualy seem to like the acetemetophine spray ive been giving the ( its been said that a mix of 3 250mg tabs of ACA dissolved in 4 leters of water, will rid ur plant of fungus AND dieseases. IT kick starts the palnts immune system so all subsiquent growth is healthy).

The basjoos are speeding up nicley as well, im tryin to water em every 2 days, and im waitin a week or 2 to start to fertilize em. I got evergreen fert. And 20 20 20. it should to excellent here

So does anyone have any suggestions for plants to try? Or any suggestions at all?

Quick update

I found a passiflora. Either a type of hydrid of Cerulea, or its called Passiflora Ampullacia. Ill post pics of the tag later, its labeled "Blue and white passion vine ( Passiflora SP.)

Also found some mango calla lily. Ill post a few new pics soon. Since ive rpretty much ran outta room LOL.

Also, the Fargesia has 5 new shoots!!!, and is so heavy with leaves, its finally "flowing" over!!!

UPDATE

Nothing really new to say, cept the fargesia has now 10 new culms this year:D But i should say, my friend in north carolina, has successfuly over wintered Mostera Deliciosa for 4 consecuitive years, with no protection. IT of course dies down, then comes back from the roots.

I just got a few pics of the Azalea flowers. Also, my gillian blade clematis poped out a flower, Some of it died down, while some of it is green, and obviously alive:D

1 and 2 - My FArgesia Rufa, and the area its growing in, with Snow on the mountain, and some fern
3 - Peoney, older then 50 years, this year about 5.5 feet tall
4 - New GRowth on Clematis "the president"
5 - Iris, Local lily, Chives, majoram, and parsley, int he front, and my wisteria, im training as a tree

7 - My canna bed, with clematis in the back. The canna have slowed down, its been a bit cool here latley, but still growing

WEve been gettin lots of rain latley, which we desperately needed. Decent temps, slightly cooler then normal, btu the nights have been nice, 9-12 C, and the canna, morning glory, and musa are all catching up now. And to my suprise, my Phyllostachys Aureosulcata alata, which hasnt done a thing in the month and a half since ive had it, has 3 shoots! Heres some pics:

Yup, i ordered em from watcom ( seedrack.com). I recieved the order, took 2 weeks to get it up here ( NW ontario). Im just trying to find some info on how to germinate em..... And i ordered seeds. I couldnt find much for plants here. Id check ebay out......

Hi Canadianplant,

All the best, man! Also, you may want to consider the Camellia Forest Nursery on North Carolina. They actually ship tp Canada, with bare root packages. But telling you the truth, patience seems to be our best friend in this case, because Camellias will grow one long tap root if not pinched off by careful and diligent nurserymen. So, if we grow tea from seed, we have a bigger chance of having stronger plants that can possibly withstand the harshness of winters much better, due to their tap roots reaching down for unfrozen water....

Again, good luck! I am trying the tea plants next spring, in order to give a whole growing season to them....
