ENSO in winter

Post by TerdalFarm » Wed Jan 27, 2010 9:17 am

I was more aggressive than usual in my plantings in 2009 as news of the building El Nino/Southern oscillation (ENSO) came in. It is still building (http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/analys ... odisc.html) in January, 2010. This week, an ENSO-fueled storm has blown across California and is making it's way here. It will arrive tomorrow (Thursday, January 28th).
This might sound good for my garden: winter rains, mild temp. For example, right now, as the clouds build, it is a balmy 44 oF, with a gentle breeze and highs forecast to reach the mid-50s oF. Soil temps are in the 40s oF. Great, right?
Not so much. Tomorrow an arctic air mass (more AO?!?) will collide right overhead. The forecast for tomorrow is freezing rain (accumulation of ~0.25 inches), then snow tomorrow night and Friday (accumulation ~9 inches). Lows of about 10 oF over the weekend. Not as cold as the last storm, but the ice may bring down power lines so I might not have the benefit of the heat tape on the palm trunks. Or the electric furnace for the indoor palms.
Or this forum. Wish me luck!

To give you an idea of how mild it has been (so far) in the PNW, my Streltzia nicolai has been outside all winter, aside from a hand full of days where I tuck it away in my shed. If what the experts are saying holds, then we should be well and clear of any serious weather for the remainder of the winter. No one can ever assure us of that 100%.

Cheers, Barrie.

Yikes, Erik!

Barrie, think you're correct, but I've noticed in 09 and 08 that March and April were colder than what we were used to.
Climate is shifting two months -----> thataway. :?

Freezing rain

I made a new thread on our "photo gallery" with freezing rain photos.
Here is a Trachy frond (note: I am using this to try to figure out how to insert photos!):
