Looking good Jim. Did they ship them bare root? Most of the time I only get to look at palms on ebay as they won`t send them over the border.

They're the best blue colored palms...good buy!

John's right...eBay sellers can't ship live plants into Canada without the phytosanitary certificate ($$$$$$).
We're so envious!

Nice next additions Jim! Sounds like you got a great deal too. The bismarkia palms are expensive even down south, 9 bucks SWEET! It will be good to see how the trithrinax fairs this winter, should do fine. I think there rated a 7a or 7b but who really knows because the same site I saw it on had needles at 7a we all know there tougher than that. I'm not really familiar with the mazari palms except for I know they look really awsome when the are big, no wonder you got them. What is there speed of growth once astablished?

I looked at the other pictures aswell, all of your stuff looks really health, I'm not surprized. I like the fact that you have palms that people even in much warmer zones don't have a lot of, your ahead of the curve. Your naina tal looks very different then mine in color, mine is lime/whitish green not sick looking though. I need to take some better pictures with my 35mm so you can tell me what you think. That is amazing that it grew all those leaves from spear pull, it looks really good. You will have a much easier time this winter with it. How did your regular trachy winter over? It looks really happy. Not really sure what the t. tesan is either I'll pull out the palm encyclopedia to check that one out. 9 foot castor bean is cool too I wish I tried one this year I kinda ran out of room. Looking good Jim! Ensete looks excellent I think the look way better when the leaves are not all ripped up.

John,the 3 palm pack -Mazari,Trithrinax and (silver)Bismark were bare root.
The big Bismark might as well have been,it arrived with dry "soil"(some had fallen out)and was not packed well but what a monster for $9,unheard of!

Barb,sorry they don't deliver up there,I will trade some palms for health insurance.

Bill,I had a Trith in last year but spear pulled,with how slow they grow at that age I didn't feel like waiting so I replaced it with S.louisiana.It did keep it's leaves over winter so,I think they are pretty tough! I have seen needles rated to zone 5b once established,it would have to be on south side in great mico-climate.I have to admit I never cared much for Needles but any palm that is looking as good as my Needles looked after the winter we had grows on you!Just by being there,they are awesome!

Silver Mazari is a stunning palm
I have read Mazari is quite slow but with heat and water once established I think they would surprise a lot of people,some say cactus grow slow but as far as overall mass goes,some cactus outgrow allmost anything!

Naini Tal is an amazing palm,this one is working on it's 8th leaf,I was really surprised when the spear pulled,I would have bet on this one to be the most bomb proof,maybe it is!
Is your Naini Tal in the ground? Some of my palms I planted really greened up once they got established.
I would like to see a picture before I go out on a limb but I do have a guess.

My big Trachy overwintered perfect and is working on leaf 6 or7? really speeding up growth now,another fort I have is growing much more slowly,usually if they are not growing fast,(at least 5 leaves per year)somethings up,or down.

Not to much info(probably a post from me or Jeff Zentner)about T.tesan out there.Google coldplant.com-Gary has some interesting palms-Misan,Tesan,Wisan.Not much info on these palms from China,certainly some version of Fortunei(aren't they all?)Tesan is an interesting palm,very compact(more than Naini Tal)or Waggie at this age,it will be interesting to see how they turn out,they look like Bonsai Trachys right now! really stout.
Had no idea Abbysinian grew so fast,this thing was 8-10" tall when I got it,can't wait to see what it does next year.

Re the blue palms you got off eBay, you might like to consider Brahea armata "Blue Hesper" palm, another striking blue color.

Yup, I planted my Nainital in the ground early spring (first winter coming up).
It's developing a very stocky trunk, and quite a canopy spread for a plant only a foot and a half tall.

Love your garden pics, your hard work has really paid off.
Your plants have really grown this year.
Nice to see you've got a Pachypodium lamerei too.

Maybe email Jay (admin), he might have a suggestion why you aren't able to get your images onto the site anymore.

Thanks Barb,I am not sure why I bought the Bismarkia Palms-great deal,love these palms,just happed to fine them at the right time,all good reasons!
There may be some secret desire to grow one outside,what a challenge that would be!
I think if all goes well protecting my B.eriospatha and Washy(with all their leaves) and they come through healthy,I will seriously consider doing this!I do not believe they are well suited to be house plants.

I used to have an amazing collection of Pachys and a lot of other stuff from Madagascar and S.E. Africa,probably a hundred different types of plants,some even won blue ribbons at the Missouri Botanical Gardens.If you have never been there you should go if you ever get a chance,one of the top ten in the world easy.

How is your Naini Tal doing?They really are amazing palms!
It will be interesting to see how T.Tesan compares when these get older,they are even more stout then Naini Tal.

I, too, love the Bizzie...stunning palm, its blue color can't be beat.
But not only blue appeals to me, I'm still mourning the loss of my little Licuala grandis last year. I used to actually take the Licuala from the living room into the bathroom when I showered, just to give it more humidity than it could receive in the rest of the house.
I'm a sucker for anything "impossible".
But no Bizzie seeds popped for me, darn.

Grow a Bizzie outside? I'll be rah rahing for you, Jim. If anyone can do it, you can.

Tesan interests me too, I'll watch yours as it develops.
I'm sure in a few years we'll have a good laugh as research points to true(r) parentage.

No Bis seeds grew for me either,I could have ordered them 5 years ago and never had one this nice,sooooo
I sold all my palnts to a Nursery in De Soto Missouri,come to think of it,she had Imbricata and some other cactus growing outside 20+ yrs ago.I always thought she was magical,very cool people,you know the old earthy type!
The MBG has a Pachy show,or used to once a year.I'm not sure if they grow them.I am going to try and get down there this fall.I need to remember to bring my camera.
I have no pics,this was over 20-25 yrs ago.

It must have been strange to sell your collection, but it sounds like your plants went to a nursery who really appreciated their diversity. They had cactus growing outside 20 years ago? Early zone pushers!

You're the first person to have brought up the topic of selling/donating a collection.
At my age, it occurred to me that giving all these palms and cycads and yuccas and jade tree and bird of paradise etc. to my family means certain death for the plants. Time for us to consider beneficiaries, ha ha.

As to your gorgeous Bizzie, it'll grow to be this:
Naturally you already know they HATE to have their roots disturbed, and transplanting often sets them back quite a bit.

Yea,I think the lady(Ms Drummond)bought them out of the kindness of her heart,it was getting late(Nov)in the season and I had no home to bring then too.I wish I could name(or spell)some of the cool ones I had,I have forgotten more than I know!
I have seen that pic of the Biz,I have looked at hundreds,probably.There is another cool picture out there of somebody standing next to one that shows how massive these really are,it was the white/silver variety.Amazing

That's awful jim, even though all of that happened you still managed to grow some seriously hardy palms in your zone 5 conditions. Cheers to you jim for growing killer palms where they don't belong.

Thanks Bill.It would have been nice to stop in there,she really had a nice collection of rare and exotic stuff from Africa.Madagascar,etc.This might have been the last time to see them,they were probably upper 60s ish back when I was in high school and that accident happened about 10 years ago,so don't know if their still around

Hope they're still around...what would happen to that collection otherwise!
