Managed to get a few seeds,
(a 2 day heated soak and then into the propagator)

First germination 5-6 weeks later.
(these were held between 85*F - 95*F)

Interesting in that link how the seeds are held low...probably ready to "hitch hike" on a passing animal.

Thanks Barb,

After this winter, I'm really starting to appreciate how hardy Sabals are.
(As long as they are getting some sun, they don't seem to mind a cold damp corner in the GH

Steve you won`t have to worry about them taking up much room in the greenhouse for a few years. I have seed grown Sabal sp. still spitting out strap leafs after three years. Steve as you know Sabal=Slooooow.

Not all that slow if given heat, lots of water and fertilizer. I think Sabals need the high humidity to really show what they have.

Laaz in comparison to every other palm species I have started from seed Sabal lousiana,riverside,minor,birmingham ect. are the slowest. I suppose if I had the ideal climate in the winter they would grow faster. At the rate they are going now with supplemental lighting in winter and our hot summers they would take ten years or more to be 7 gal. size.

As for slow growing Palms, this Coccothrinax litoralis germinated the beginning of 2005
A little luck and it might need re-potted within the next five years

all my sabals grow s-l-o-w also. Must have something to do with the 3 months of winter I subject them to each Dec Jan Feb. I'll bet if I lived in Florida I could really grow a nice looking sabal.

Sabal louisiana,birminghamn both pick up steam once they get a few fans going,I planted my 3 S.louisiana in Aug and they already put out 2 leaves by Nov,now thats fast for palm not to mention a Sabal!

not sure , have not looked at them since they were covered in November. Its supposed to be 65F here for the next 3 days , and on Saturday I will pull the plastic back, dig in the leaves and check my sabals out. If it works out i'll get a picture or two also.

Maybe we should try increasing or changing fertilizer...I'm tired of waiting for the little ones, too.

Anybody ever tried straight Urea (46-0-0) on a palm?

Barb - you go girl. fertilizer is one part of the equation. IMHO heat and humidity is what makes palms grow fast. My sababls that I have inside in my warm humid basement under lights are growing better and look nicer than the ones I have growing in my garage under the same type lights. The only difference is about 30 degrees (warmer in the basement).

ha ha, Kent, I just might try it on a very stubborn little palm.

The bugger hasn't grown an inch...or a leaf...in almost two years.
The only thing that's changed is the label has faded

It's hard to fool them...they know they're not home.
