Found a 7 foot Bottle Palm !

Yippeeeeee...

Spread plastic and an old sheet over the floor to give this guy a good misting.

No plant tag at the nursery, hope it's a Hyophorbe lagenicaulis bottle palm.

I suppose this is how they trim the spent fronds:

AND, since it's already at 7 feet AND I have 8 foot ceilings

I'll still take one of Erik's if he can find one when he sends the mule palms to Barrie.

Wonder how old this Bottle is.

Why: Same as all plant lovers...'coz I wanted one (to replace my little one succumbing to spear pull this year).

Really? So how do bottle palms do in Victoria? Vancouver? (winter indoors of course, summer outdoors).

Barb I`m totally jealous. Do they have any more? I can see a transplant in the spring. That is huge for the 7gal pot it`s in. Great find.

John, as it happens, they did have TWO...the other one's about 6 feet tall.

I think my car can handle another run.
(yes, I brought the 7 footer home in my little oldsmobile, windows rolled up 'coz it was cold...)

Here's John's bottle palm.
Mine is hidden behind it.

Forgot to re-orient pic. There's a bit of brown at the end of the spear but think it'll be OK:

And another spear is coming up, already a foot long:

Cool ... do hope it's a bottle palm!

Very robust spear has a reddish stripe (versus the typical orange/yellow of Spindle palm).
Bright shading is shadows from the vertical blinds.

We'll have a race to see whose palm punches through the ceiling first...

Barb thank you so much for getting that Bottle palm for me that`s awsome. Very rare to be able to buy them here. I am so looking forward to having one or two of those cans while admiring my new Bottle.

Looks to me like the newest spear is about to open? It will be front and center outside next spring.

Hey look at this Bottle palm's emerging spear tip!
The 1 foot long spear is not opening, although it looks like it is.
It's like a pattern/design pointing/orienting the new spear.

Here's a couple of shots of the Queen palm I picked up. It stands 8' 3" tall plus the height of the three gallon container. I'll be attending to a small mite situation this morning and repotting it into a 5 gallon pot. Not a bad score for 20 bucks.

I've gotta have a closer look at the two bottles.
While nothing is crawling, there are some things on both Bottles that I haven't seen before.
With the lack of space, the fronds are touching my three triangle palms...oh oh

First I'll wipe the leaves bottom and top with rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth before I get out the big guns..

PS--coming from a "reputable" nursery here (where they've been for approx. 6 months), I wouldn't have thought it was necessary to quarantine!

Hey Barb ... I've never used rubbing alcohol and wonder about the effects it may have on the leaflets.
I mixed up Malathion and a couple of drops of dish liquid, to better disperse the insecticide. I used about a half a quart in a spray bottle outside, and doused it quite heavily, to reach all the tiny nook and crannies.

This will reside in my coldfarme over winter and move it to a more friendlier, frost free environment if temps dip much below -2°C (28°F). I'll plant it next spring with a protective enclosure next winter.

Here it is after the repotting and insecticide treatment, soaking up the sun.

Everything looks good out in your great yard...that yucca's still trying to open!
See that you drank the "diameter measuring tool"

I had read about rubbing alcohol on a website...glad I mentioned it.
I don't have anything else. Maybe I'll just try the dish soap on a cloth for now.
I'm guessing it may be brown scale on the underside...oh no!
Tiny brownish bumps "stuck" onto the underside of petioles.

If it were spider mites, they'd rub off, I recall from years ago.

Barb, love the bottle, your palm ain't bad either. Nice find. these seem to be good indoor palms. I've had one that has done very well inside the last 2 years. It had some frond browning issues this summer but I think it will be fine now.

Everything looks great at your place. keep up the good work.

lack of humidity? potassium problem?

I'll make my own soil mix for the repotting.
Is yours in rich soil? i.e. leaf mold/compost?

This beggar is so heavy, repotting will be interesting

not sure what caused the browning of the fronds. I repotted and treated with systemic granulars a couple of times and it seemed to help. It only has 3 leaves on it today, it looks much better and am hopeful it survives the winter and thrives next summer. They are one of my favorite palms.

Great that yours is healthier now.

That's one thing I liked about these palms.
They only end up with 3 or 4 leaves, and mature at about 12 feet.
Still 4 feet taller than my ceilings...

Cutting off the spent petiole sheath will be tricky, though.
Looks as though the nursery folks used an exacto knife for a "close shave".
I'm looking forward to the bottle shape becoming more pronounced.
