I know its to late to fertilize right now but I was wondering if anyone knew a really good granular fertilizer that would work well with my Trachy's, also it would have to be available in Canada.

What are your guys thoughts on those palm tree fertilizer spikes any good? I have been useing them for a while know with ok results.

I use Scotts, Osmocote Classic 18-6-12 in a 50lb bag. It runs about $100 to $120 but should last the average homeowner a long time.

www.Growthproducts.com Has a very wide variety of fertilizers. If you are buying in larger quantities to save yourself a few bucks.

Growth products is based out of NY and they offices all around the states, I am not sure if they have one in Canada, but they do have one here in washington state.

One other question, I have the grass line right up against the trunk of my Trachy so I was wondering if the actual grass would stop the granular fertilizer from penetrating the soil and releasing all the nutrients. Would it be a good idea to have a couple of feet of soil left around the trunk.?

How big is this trachy?wheres the mulch?

This was taken in Sept of this year since then the grass has grown right up to the trunk. Should I just remove the grass so the fertilizer will penitrate.....??

It needs to be mulched for winter at least 2' out from trunk and 3-4"deep,next year in late march you could sprinkle it in the mulch,however I usually start pulling the mulch back on warm days when sun is shining starting in march,otherwise soil takes months to warm up.In mid to late april depending on spring I would pull the mulch back and sprinkle your fert in-pulling mulch back in early spring is very important,a lot of plants get there signal to grow just as much from soil temps, anyone who has planted early knows that palms don't respond untill soil warms anyway

I will be putting down mulch before I build my enclosure, but I'm confused wouldn't it be better to remove the mulch right away in the spring so that the sun can penetrate the ground and warm it up quicker...? Anyways back to my original question would the fertilizer work more efficiently if the grass line was a few feet away from the trunk or would it matter?

I just thought that the fertilizer would have trouble penetrating the soil with grass all around the trunk...

Yea,once the temps are basically staying above freezing in spring,pull back the mulch- In answer to your original question,I think digging out the area or shape( where your mulch is going)and then flipping it over(the grass) to add some organic matter makes sense because the grass won't live under the mulch anyway and when you pull the mulch back in spring and begin fertilizing at least you'll know its going to your palm and not the grass right?
