Trachycarpus princeps

Post by Kansas Tropic Man » Fri Jul 18, 2008 2:41 pm

I am interested to see if anyone has experience with this palm. Commonly referred to as Stone Gate Palm. If so how cold hardy? is it fast growing or slow?

I have just a small seedling that sits in my unheated coldframe year round. Too early to tell what it's capable of. It's highly unlikely these will ever become main stream or widely available. A collector palm only.

Cheers, Barrie.

These are among the slowest growing of all the Trachycarpus species I have. From what I have learned from others with this palm it is marginal planted in a zone 8 and needs protection.

They are hardy from 10 F. to 110 F. They are also the fastest Trachycarpus I have grown from seed. The ones in the photo above are 14-15 months old.

ooh, Stevea07, those are beauties.

Everyone will recall this re Gibbons and Spanner looking for seeds http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=h ... %26hl%3Den where it was disputed the plants we possess were likely to be a Princeps unless it had the typical white underside, as they do in habitat.

As with many other Trachy, hybridization seems to be almost routine.
