Hey Guys,
It's spring here! I received some palms from a friend bareroot. I am putting them straight in the ground!

Some small Trachy Fortunei, 2-3 leaf Sabal Minor seedlings, a nice sized Washingtonia Filibusta is my haul. Now what? I am just putting them in the ground and hoping for the best (along with some nice cool water on the 77 degree days this week)...
Am I doing this right?

Also, I got a 5 gal Robusta to try. I am just putting that in the ground too. Keeping air away from roots and watering frequently. I am going to do the same with 3 Butia Capitata that I got.

I'm excited for this season!!!

WISH ME LUCK! Any other advice that you experts can give me?

Taylor congratulations on your new palms. You might want to add some "Superthrive" brand root stimulator to give them a good healthy root system in the ground. Don`t fertilize for the first couple of months until the roots have a chance to settle a bit. Show us some pics of how they are doing.

Do bad things happen without it?

I just killed a small Butia Capitata because it was sent bareroot and I did not know what to do. I will know better this time...

Taylor you will find superthrive at Wallmart or any plant nursery. Google "Superthrive" to find out more. You will be giving your bareroot plants a head start versus not using it IMO.

Don't water the plants unless they need the water. Too much water can actually kill the palms (can rot the roots and provide conditions in which bad fungi and bacteria can attack the palms). They need oxygen in the soil in order to function. When you plant the trees, make sure that only the roots are covered by the soil.

Add soil supplements when planting to help with proper drainage. Compost, sand, etc.
