With spring right around the corner what if any will be your new additions this spring? I Just bought a 5 gallon butia eriospatha. The terrible cycle starts again.

I am one palm purchase away from sleeping in my greenhouse.

I am looking at varieties of Sabal Minor including Louisiana and perhaps a McCurtain or other hardy variety.

I will try not to buy a Nannorhops Ritchiana.

My major purchases this year will be Cannas and Bananas as well as Z 7 vines for the shelter.

I bought a couple of exotic plants and a Gardenia for my wife so if anything is going into the garage it will be the couch.

Hey mark My butia capitata in the ground I brought back from California. The Butia eriospatha I just bought I ordered off of ebay from California. There are a few place here in chicago that have palms. One is called jamaica gardens in morton grove. Another is a place called pesches flowers and garden supplies and its in des plaines IL. Another is Sid's green house and nursery in bolingbrook Il.

I am only buying if the palm salespeople ask me to buy. LOL. Seriously I am about out of room. I have to come up with a way to protect my cold hardy stuff outside in some kind of a pop-up/temporary greenhouse structure. I'll try to post a picture in the next few days of what I am looking at.

Its all about me. Hence a picture of a temporary structure I am thinking about. Your thoughts ?

Seriously, I am thinking of doing the same thing with my poly house. Set it up over a few palms in the ground, move my pots into it during winter.

this particular one is 14' across and 10' high. I don't know how easy it is is to set up, but I have a feeeling it sets up like a modern day tent. It also comes with tie downs and stakes. Because of its domed shape it aslo stands up to the winds very well. I think this one can be purchased for about $460 , shipping included. maybe cheaper during the summer months.

I checked out Jamaican Gardens on Sunday. Awsome. I bought four new palms. A Washy, King, Triangle and Spindle. Can't thank you enough for telling me about it. I was like a kid in a candy store. I can't wait to check out the others you mentioned and go back to Jamaican again! I'm on a roll now.

Where do you go in Las Vegas to get your palms and how do you get them across the Can/US border?

So Far all that I have got from Las Vegas is agaves and yuccas. Turner Greenhouses will bare root and prepare the plants for shipping. They specialize in cacti agave and yucca but do have some palms. www.turner-greenhouse.com

I brought mine back from Las Vegas in the plane as carry on luggage after they were bare rooted. A 5 gal yucca was 27" long including roots and leaves without folding the roots up. It weighed about 4 lbs.

To get them into Canada you will need a Phytosanitary certificate (free in Nevada), a detailed bill of sale and a Form CFIA 5256(application for an import permit) approved by the CFIA.

Turners will prepare the bill of sale and get the Phytosanitary certificate for you if you are mail ordering. You can get the form from the CFIA(Canadian Food Inspection Agency) website. www.inspection.gc.ca/english/for/mpppe.shtml

I don't know the exact procedure for mail order. I picked up the plants, took them to the Nevada dept of Agriculture, where I had made an appointment, and got the P cert. Then I completed the Form 5256 and faxed it to CFIA. They were supposed to fax the approval back and notify the Border security at the airport. It took about 5 hours running around Las Vegas to get the plants, get the P cert., complete and fax the form.

If you are in Las Vegas and Turners doesn't have what you want you can try Plant World on W Charleston. they had quite a few palms but I didn't check the prices. www.plantworldnursery.com The Inspector told me that he goes out there fairly often as well. Plant World won't bareroot anything for you. You will have to do it yourself before going to the Nevada Dept. of Agriculture. I should still have the phone # for the Nevada Dept of Ag. in my stuff if someone wants it.
