Fairly spectacular when such a large seed pops:

Jay and I have something in common. I have tried 3 or 4 mango seeds over the years ............ and nothing.
Kent in Kansas
where it's cold in winter (always)
and hot in summer (usually)

Barb,

I am not sure if you knew this already, but the seed can be removed from it's outer shell. I take a butter knife and open the outer shell like an oyster. It eliminates cleaning the outer shell and does not effect the germination.

Craig, thanks, wish I'd known that
Nice pic!

How does one know if a seed has an outer shell that can be removed.
Is there some guiding principle somewhere?
Or just hit-n-miss?

Sorry, I can't take credit for the photo. I found it online and thought it showed the outer shell the best.

Barb, when I am trying a new seed. I usually try to look for info online. Type in your search bar, "How to germinate a(insert the plant type here)" and see what comes up. Rarepalmseeds.co usually has info on germination also, http://rarepalmseeds.com/archive.shtml

Hi Craig,
Yes, I have read all the testimonials on RPS for the palm seeds I ordered.
Most just involved soaking, now and then nicking the seed.
Generally "anywhere from 3 weeks to 1 year" for germination.
And I've read of some palm seeds that are "blended" with rocks in a concrete mixer or driven over by trucks to break the outer shell.

That search phrase is a good idea. Thanks.

I have always cracked the shell. I had two growing good over the summer but through winter they both just died on me. :(

That's too bad, Jay.

If (when) mines grows, will have to figure out their winter requirements in habitat.

Spider mites got mine last year. They love mangos!!! I started another 3 weeks ago and just noticed that it broke the surface today.

Craig,
Great that you started another.
They seem to germinate quickly.

Spider mites? Thanks for the warning.
hmm, sounds like a job for nicotine-juice.

I've been looking for evidence of spider mites to try out the nicotine juice theory (it worked on aphids).
This is the first year I can't find any :|
